Currently listening to the ABC radio feed on the internet of the first test in Perth and either these guys have been living under a rock for the last 17 years or they're apologists for apartheid but one of the commentators called the South Africans the Springboks- which irked me so much that I wrote an email to the ABC.

On the television side its not much better either with the exception of Tony Greig who so biased in favour of SA that its almost embarrassing- I suppose he's got make up for Lawrie & Co.

Aussie commentators are great, Although Tony Greig is not one of them.

BTW, calling the SA cricket team the Springboks is a branding issue that has nothing to do with the commentators, but rather SA cricket.

Aussie commentators are the flippent worst!!! I hate listening to them. One sided as hell!

How is this a branding issue? I mean FFS, they don't call themselves Springboks, they haven't done since re-admission. So how does a commentator who works for the ABC(one of the more professional broadcasting outfits) still call the visiting South Africans Springboks?

If Hugh Bladen and his gang called the Wallabies by another name they would be vilified from here to eternity.

Call me a conspiracy theorist but I can only come to the conclusion that its deliberate attempt at driving some sort of political message.

PS: I see Neil Manthorpe is also part of the commentary team. Hopefully he reverses some of the retardation in the commentary box.

Although the Aussie commentators are biased, their jokes and funny comments are far better than the Supersport team. For example, when Ntini caught that catch but went over the boundary, one of the Aussie commentators remarked that "you'd need Usain Bolt to capture that ball if he [Ntini] had tossed it up for one of the slips to catch."

SA commentators are lame, bland and have very little excitement in their voices.

Listening to Paul Adams is like being subjected to waterboarding...the guy simply doesn't have a clue and talks through his nose. Why are Supersport's commentators generally so bad?

That makes ZERO sense. The actual Springbok team (i.e. our rugby side) are the ones that could be called the Proteas because of branding but our cricket team have always been called the Proteas. In any case, bottom line is the Aussies suck in every way and we're gonna beat 'em. :D

Back to the issue of commentary though, I tend to agree with Dominic Rooney, the SS commentators sound like they're high on tik and couldn't crack a decent joke even if they were trained by Barry Hilton. Robin Jackman is half decent though..

This is really crazy man - lol. You'll get an award for the month of december for this comment.

Of course if someone is not calling your product by the correct name - then you have a branding problem.

Perhaps you should email SA cricket and tell them that the Aussies are calling Saffer cricket the Springboks, and tell them about your conspiracy theory.

+1 Give me a bit of humour any day. This is entertainment, not a funeral.

They need to make sure they are BEE compliant.

Paul adams and the word professionalism, are 2 entirely different things.

Paul Adams don't know ish!

Please don't confuse BEE with EE:D

Back on the topic, I betcha there's a ton of knowledgeable people of a darker hue that can commentate on cricket. I mean, Paul Adams can't speak with authority- having a "frog-in-a-blender" action doesn't quite qualify him.

I actually used to be one of the guy's biggest fans but he let fame get to his had and forgot to work on his game- which the English found out within a couple of tests of first playing him. And now we have the ridiculous situation of a 30 year-old guy commentating whereas he should've been aiming to qualify for the team.

i agree, the aussie commentators are biased but they are far more entertaining than the SS commentators, they have interesting stories and definitly add something to the game, it is however nice to listen to the aussie commentators when you only need 150 to win :D

:D Isn't it a lovely position we find ourselves in? And all the more sweeter after we were 196/7 at the close on day 2!!!! Damn what a series we having!!!!??

i just can't wait for the return series, need to go and get my ticket, it's gonna be awesome!!

I've been in Australia for a year now, and have been following the cricket on the radio (ABC Grandstand) and on Channel 9. The coverage has been excellent and totally unbiased. Sure, they are disappointed when Australia have been subjected to a hiding in each session, but they genuinely applaud the good cricket and excellent shots/catched/fielding from the SA cricketers. The only biased commentators are Tony Greig and Richie Benaud, but that can be expected. The only negative is slight ignorance of the political situation in SA, referring to Amla as a coloured Muslim etc. But by and large they have been hugely complimentary of our players, particularly Duminy (insisting that he is a find of the future and that he must play in Sydney), Smith's captaincy, Amla's wristy ability as an excellent No. 3, Kallis's all round ability and AB's fielding. They call it as they see it.

Yes, riiiiiggghhhttt!

In the commentary box Ian Healy and Shane Warne spent the past two days imagining, with degrees of seriousness, how Australia could win. The hope and cheerleading became embarrassing. "If this last pair can hang around and get a partnership of around 200, it will make it hard for the South Africans." It wasn't quite that bad but it was close, with Warne recommending Michael Clarke match his best figures of 6 for 9 and recalling the Sri Lanka Test of 1992, when Australia defended 181.

;):D

Let me add to my previous post:

Warnie is alright and gives credit where it is due. The commentators that I forgot to mention as also being biased are Ian Healy and Mark Nicholas.

It is however, much more pleasant listening to them than listening to SuperSport, or God forbid SABC coverage - especially when SA is winning.
