Authentication required when requesting PUK code

so my housemate just got home, her phone got stolen. long story short she had an old cellphone in her room she needed to bring back to life - she needed a SIM card.

I keep a few spare emergency sim cards around the place for such emergencies. One was a sim card i had used before the other was brand spanking new one that had never been used before (and hence was USELESS cause it hadn't been activated before RICA started).

So that left the second SIM card...Here's the thing i hadn't used it in about 6 months and i couldn't remember what the PIN or actual Cellphone number was (i lost that little slip pf paper that has all those details on it)... so i ended up blocking the sim card...

no problem i though ill just phone in and qoute the SIM number on the back of the SIM card and they will be able to tell me what the cellphone number is so i can get the PUK code.... BUT NO! cannot do that! I need to authenticate myself by telling them when the number was last used and how much is on it...HTF should i know i haven't used it in six months i dont remember any of this.

SO WHAT MUST I DO WITH THIS SIM CARD? CUT IT IN HALF?
really really PISSES me off. :mad::mad::mad::mad:

But dont worry about my housemate i gave her a spare Virgin sim i had that worked fine...go figure.
 
But everyone keeps logs throughout the year of When and Where and the duration of their calls?

I am sure you would have been just as annoyed if someone had stolen your SIM and Vodacom gave them the details to unblock it without the required authentication. These steps are there to protect the consumer (i.e. YOU).

Uh yea except the sim card isnt stolen. Its mine. And i cant use it- so Im asking VODACOM what must i do with this sim card? Have a bonfire with it? Gotta be really dumb If they wont even let you have a sim card to spend money on their network with...and thanks for changing the name of the topic ic much appreciated. Not.
 
Collect all those useless SIM cards

then build a little SIM card house/boat/car :D

(instead of a matchstick boat etc)

Vodacom doesn't know that unless you can provide the proof they need to know that it's yours. You are the one who locked your SIM in the first place, you going to blame them for that as well?

You are welcome to use the SIM just need to provide them with the proof that it's yours :rolleyes:

Uh its mine, why should i have to prove its mine? Thats like me walking up so someone in checkers and taking their trolley and demanding them to prove its their trolley...wtf else has been pushing the trolley around? THE OWNER.

Ive decided to cut the sim card up into little pieces and Im gonna bake it into a little pie and send it off to vodacom. Nothing like a bit of sim card in your pie i think.
 
How can you prove it's your sim, and not one you grabbed out of someone else's phone while "helping" them. Possibly with confidential information on it, and potentially providing access to their banking accounts through OTP systems.

You're being unreasonable. This is not a trolley.

ITS A PREPAID SIM IT PROBABLY HAS LIKE R1.50 ON IT! its not connected to any internet banking and i can assure you its not hiding any fricken state secrets. i know this beacuse ITS MINE! the point is I CANT USE IT because vodacom wont let me.

How does a SIM with potentially personal information on it compare to a communal item like a trolley? Besides all they needed to do was ask the store management to review the security footage to prove that you stole their trolley.

I suggest you have a taste of your pie first before sending it to Vodacom, possibly you will have a moment of clarity and realise you are being completely unreasonable.

Once again, how does Vodacom know
a) It's your SIM
b) It's not registered to internet banking
c) It's not been stolen
If you cannot prove the contrary.

If you had registered for RICA, I am sure they would have had a lot more information they could have used to identify you (like with contract phones), but of course you think RICA is a bad idea as well.

Rather than having a rant over a 99c item, why don't you wake up to the fact that the only "FAIL" here was your inability to remember your pin (or keep it recorded in a safe place) and accept the fact that Vodacom is behaving in the consumers best interest by insisting on verification before providing you with a PUK.

Seperate issues, but yes, that is a racket. Nothing to do with this thread though. RICA could potentially be added as a verification of age, and that could then be pinned on the cellphone service providers as they knew the owner's age.
 
I think you're getting your knickers in a knot for nothing. Go to Clicks, buy a new SIM (comes with PUK) - cost R3. The 10 free SMSes you get with the card are worth more...

Throw away the old SIM cards.
 
I have plenty of new sims problem is they arent activated and i cant activate it because i need rica. The sim that vodacom refuses to give me the number for is activated and hence i can actually use it! Well i could actually use it if vodacom would pull their head out the sand. The bottom line is vodacom has blocked me from using that sim for No reason either than the fact i cant remember How much is on it!! Imagine someone locking you out your house cause you cant remember How many litres of milk you have in the fridge. Anyways it looks like Vodacom is completely ignoring this thread so i see No further way forward except to cut up the sim card. I wonder what happens If you melt it....hmmm

Giving someone access to a house they can't prove they own is stupid, just like giving someone unauthorised access to a sim card they don't own.

With a house there's plenty of questions to ask though, so asking how much milk is left isn't the obvious choice. With a sim card there's not much for them to check.

If you have that many sim cards, it's already suspicous. Not knowing your own phone number is VERY suspicous already. If it has any real value, you should at the very least know the phone number. Since you don't, they have no reason to give you access to it.

Would you give someone lost keys if they didn't even know what car it unlocks?

Again your analogies are completely off the mark. When was the last time you tried to reset the pin on your ATM card without identification? If your SIM was RICA activated I suspect verifying your identity would actually have been much easier.
