Hi,

I would like to track my Rubbish bin movements using Home assistant so that on Bin Day I can send a reminder if bin has not been put outside and do the same if bin has not been returned. Currently am using a boolen which I update manually after moving the bin but would like this to happen automatically depending on where the bin is

Thank yoiu

You can possibly use the new calendar schedule in 2022.9 to do this

So its not the scheduling thats the problem but I want Home assistant to be able to know if the BIN is not in its regular spot(taken outside) or not

not quite the solution you after but saw a guy use NFC tag for this purpose. Was more a persistant reminder if the bin hadnt been scanned on bin day, once scanned it reset until the new bin day

Just a ultrasonic sensor against the wall where it stands. Add 2 automations on the entities to check on specific days if the range is less or more and then at night do the check again. If the distance is not within a range of where the bin is suppose to be send a push notification

Can I just say, I love all these cool ideas, but are we not just complicating our lives , in terms of time to design, implement, and monitor / maintain esotoric solutions to achieve simple things? I mean a reminder should be enough to get some thing done in this use case. Maybe I am just getting old.

But then ...
Another possibly easier solution is use of Blue IRIS with CCTV? If you have camera's outside your perimeter, it can see if a bin is detected or not and advise accordingly on the relevant day?

Thanks for the CCTV idea because I already have frigate running.

And to respond to your first comment yes it sounds like and over kill but the problem with reminders was that they would still run even when someone has taken the bin out or if someone ignores it you want it to run again so definitely adding that extra dimension to that automation really makes it efficient
