Hi All

Firstly, I'm not attacking the services offered by either MTN or Autopage but I've got an issue that I hope someone can help me resolve.

When I signed up with Autopage almost 2 years ago, they ported my number from Vodacom to MTN at my request. My contract is almost up and I phoned their cancellations dept so that I could not renew my contract with them and that I can simply rollover to pre-paid once the contract expires.

The consultant then informed that I would not be able to keep my number as I had ported from Vodacom to MTN 2 years ago.

Does anyone know any work around for this whereby I can move onto Prepaid and still keep my number? I've had my number for 6 years now and don't plan on smsing the world to tell them my number is changing.

Thank you in anticipation.

Bighit , good luck to you mate , I am so tired of dealing with Incompetent Altech Autopage (they cant even allocate airtime to a sim card) after 2 months .

I really have no idea wrt moving from Contract to Prepaid - I know for a fact that previously (until 2yrs back) u couldnt do this - if u cancel the contract (after 24mths is up) your line gets disconnected. But I have since heard that u can actually go the prepaid route - I would like to do this with my sister's line when the contract expires. Maybe contact ICASA?

The call centre guy said that because I had originally ported from Vodacom to MTN, I cannot go onto prepaid and keep my number. If I hadn't ported in the first place, then I could have gone on as a prepaid customer when my contract expired.

I guess i'll have to go to MTN and see what they say. The schlep of cellphone contracts...

Well, Port back to MTN then?

I am on MTN already. I think you meant I should port back to Vodacom. Let me go back to Autopage and see what they say about this. I'll update the thread tomorrow if I hear anything.

Sent E-mail to Autopage customer service now, I'd like to see how quick their response is.

I have "beef" with Altech autopage, I'm also planning on porting from MTN/Altech to Vodacom. It takes them 24 working hours to give me a data bundle whereas vodacom takes minutes, Altech's service sucks.

Well I just heard back from Autopage now, this is what they had to say:

Good day Thank you for contacting Altech Autopage Cellular (Pty) Ltd. Please be advised that you can port your number to another network however you would need to contact our cancelations department on 0116501936 to cancel the cancelation as once the contract has been cancelled you will lose your number. Do not hesitate to contact us on 0860 23 24 24 for further assistance

So obviously, the first guy I dealt with in cancellations tried to make me carry on with my existing contract.

Shot to all for suggestions, it looks like we may be on to a winner here.

Ok, my joy was short lived. I phoned Autopage and they told me that I can keep my number if i join a contract from any company, however, to go onto prepaid, i will lose my number.

What a stuff up.

Sounds like they just wanna keep your contract. I had a couple of contracts with nashua mobile. One was originally a vodacom number and the other was an mtn one. I ported both ti cell c. At the end of the contracts I cancelled both and requested to port to pre paid. I just had to wait for the waiting period to lapse then I ported both to mtn contracts. So I don't know what altech or auto pages problem is.
