AV Receiver Upgrade

Upgraded to an RZ-50 and purchased from Ave1994. Was initially going for a Denon x3800 but decided to stay with Onkyo as my old AVR never gave me any issues. Very happy with it. Using Bentley Acoustics speakers as well. The site may look dodge but it's all legit (the grey imports are clearly marked, however you have an option to pay more for the local stock on most products as well).

It’s amazing how something like the issues Onkyo had sticks in your mind.

I got an Onkyo in 2001 and it was unreal for the price (R6.000). It was the flower first receiver to have DPLII and received huge praise. I thought some of the features (ie volume levelling per source) were quite nifty & thought Onkyo would always be on my list of brands.

That HDMI issue from years back, has made me not even look at them going forward. As someone said there are probably no issues now - but the HDMI issues were enough for me.

It's the same with any product or brand. Something goes wrong, you won't touch it again.

I dunno … I think if it’s a one off / bad luck etc, I’d probably still use it.

But with Onkyo there were tons and tons of posts on the issue across various models spanning like 2 years.

For me it all depends how the company handles the issue. If they are excellent with after sales then I would totally continue supporting them even if I had an issue initially. And the same thing in reverse, if after sales is bad I will shy away from a company even if there isn't anything wrong with the product.

There is a mix of factors to this. Popularity and of course complaints shine more than compliments.

and I think in this case, it wasn't great either

AVE is legit. I have dealt with them.

Vuaghan is super helpful. He is the guy behind Bentley Acoustics.

Regarding the AVR. I recently got a Denon AVR-X2700 and am happy. Paid R10k from Francois The Hi-Fi Guy

Totally legit, I bought my current Marantz AVR from them.

You should be aware though, that the rest of the local retailers do not like them, because AVE have been importing stuff directly from overseas, thereby bypassing the horrendous markups by the local distributors.

i see they do offer full warranty even on their demo's which makes it very tempting

Look, I would buy again from them: Vaughn is a stand-up guy, has been in the business for ages, and they have their own repair centre.

I trust them more than distributors, because they don't have any brand affiliation, and thus there is no agenda.

Yeah, i had one, all HDMI outputs failed.
That was probably 10 years ago, it must be fixed by now?
I have the onkyo 609. The HDMI board failed and I had it replaced for free outside of warranty. It has been rock solid since.
Bought the unit in 2011/12, replaced the HDMI board around 2015.

Yeah man they are legit. I currently have a sub that went in for repairs under warranty, standing by him. Need to go fetch it. I bought it from him as well. He has one hell of a mofo big ass house he operates from.

Sub in the box almost fills the whole bak of my double cab.

All above board.

I need to upgrade my AVR as well and I was thinking of something basic like the Yamaha RXV 4A but I'm starting to lean more to the Denon X1800H.

I looked at a few models above those two but they don't seem to offer anything more that I would need. Going another level up and doubling the price starts to add features again that look interesting but I'm not sure I should spend the extra bucks. Any tips?

I'd seriously recommend you look at the Marantz range

I have looked at them but comparing the X1800H to the Cinima 70 feature wise its almost identical. Is the better power supply and preamps and aesthetics worth R7000?

Aesthetics, definitely not.

But definitely yes for the better power supply & preamps.

Also, IMHO you need an external amp for the 70, it just doesn't have enough oomph to drive decent speakers.

IYS, I would head to avforums.co.za and see what's in the Classifieds.
