The Vatican newspaper and radio station have called the film "Avatar" simplistic, and criticized it for flirting with modern doctrines that promote the worship of nature as a substitute for religion.

Avatar simplistic, says Vatican

modern doctrines?

The Hindu doctrine of pantheism has been around for thousands of years! :D

This is nothing new. And there have been thousands of other movies that have had this as a theme.

Either these bloggers are being opportunistic or they are really naive.

Was reading today on CNN that 1000's are suffering from depression from the beauty of the alien world.

(CNN) -- James Cameron's completely immersive spectacle "Avatar" may have been a little too real for some fans who say they have experienced depression and suicidal thoughts after seeing the film because they long to enjoy the beauty of the alien world Pandora.

Depressed? All I thought while watching the movie was: Why don't just napalm the damn jungle, and then drop a MOAB on the One Tree. Then send in the killdozers to scrape away the ash and bones. Much simpler!

Right

NOT left ........:D

It is a globally recognised paradigm that more technologically races will ALWAYS dominate those less advanced. ( and sorry for all those crying about it -- the Anglo-Saxons ARE the master race )

WHAT do you think would happen if a vastly more advanced race decided to visit EARTH ????? -- to obtain THEIR "onobtanium"

The only thing you need to read about Avatar is right here: I just read this masterpiece and laughed my ass off.

Awesomely funny, highlights pretty much all the plot holes and inconsistencies I had noticed and a whole lot more that I hadn't considered.

Don't get me wrong, Avatar was visually impressive beyond anything I have ever seen on the big screen, but man was that story weak.

On a more on-topic note: Why does the Vatican even make comments like this? Would they have preferred that the cat people be catholic? If anything I would have thought they would praise the films underlying message of acceptance and tolerance of those that are different. Then again the catholic church doesn't exactly have a history of tolerance.

Only in recent history... While soap was mass produced in the then "civilised" Middle East and Asia these Anglo-Saxons were raiding villagers, hygiene was not a priority.

Dominant civilizations come and go in cycles, Asians are next up for the "Master Race" title.

Avatar is just another CGI action movie, why does the Vatican suddenly care about -this- movie all of a sudden? Did they make comments about Lord of the Rings or Transformers or Spiderman too?

Anyhow as for the depression thing, those people need to play some more world of warcraft, that should give them more than enough "pandora fix" . And if WoW's art style is not sufficient , get Everquest 2 or Age of Conan ;)

And finally, obviously the vatican does not seem to grasp the power of "simplistic", especially in religion. The more complex, the more people start shooting holes into the theories, give them a simple concept/idea/philosophy that everyone understand and you're much more likely to get people to agree with and understand the faith as originally intended...

The Pope is just sad because Avatar > bible.

seriously? You seriously think that? A movie that is not even two months old versus a document that has been around for two thousand years and been on the best seller list for the last couple of hundred years? Seriously? Did you even think about that before you said it? :D Even despite the religious angle, you think that such an important piece of archaeology, culture and world history is overshadowed by a plothole-ridden movie with eye-candy?
