Axxess, without prior notification to their customers, changed to the IS backbone yesterday. My workshop connection was down for nearly an hour while I tried to sort out the problem.

Phoning their technicial support line (a premium call number charged at 99c/minute) resulted in being put on hold indefinitely. No recorded message was available to say what was happening. While I was on hold I was swamped with incoming calls from Axxess customers demanding to know why they were having connection issues.

I eventually redialed and chose a random option in the hopes of getting to actually talk to a person. I was told by Mark that the DNS server IPs had changed and he kindly give me the new ones. I didn't recognise them as being from the Telkom/SAIX groupings but was in too much of a hurry to ask questions. (Being in a hurry is going to cost me money today, believe me!)

After supper last night I discovered I could not send email. I had arrangements to go out and when I got home at about 22:30 I found I still could not send mail. I changed my SMTP sever to smtp.axxess.co.za from smtp.saix.net but was still unable to send. I phoned tech. support again, this time there is a message advising customers to change their DNS server settings but nothing is mentioned about mail servers. This is when I make the discovery that now I'm on the IS backbone! I duly change my mail server, and yes it works but man is it slow!!

This morning (07:00)I need to download software from AVG (there is a new version out for paid customers and I need to go and upgrade several installations). When we were on the SAIX backbone I averaged downloads of 40-50mbps. This morning I'm lucky to get 20mbps. Ok, I figured maybe it was just AVG, new version etc, server is busy. So I try some CNet downloads (CCleaner etc) again only 20mbps. I also need stuff from Malwarebytes.org - now I only get 15mbps. Each of these downloads was done individually and not concurrently and I know that I normally get approximately double that speed. As I sit here, I watch my download speeds get slower and slower with each download that I try.

I have several problems with what has happened at Axxess:

1. Axxess never bothered to inform customers that there was a change in infrastructure pending. No email, nothing!!

2. The change was done with maximum disruption to their customers

3. I am currently not impressed with the download speed which is significantly slower than when we were on SAIX. Surfing is pathetic - Genes Reunited page in the UK is taking nearly 10 minutes to load fully whereas before it only took 2 minutes max!

Come on Axxess, is this the way to treat loyal customers?

wait .. you have a 500mb/s line ? we have those in SA ?

gees, i would never complain about 20mbps... that would take what ? 10 seconds to download AVG, if its 200 megs...

I was wondering why my connection was so bad last night. I'm cancelling my axxess account as I type. Why weren't customers informed FFS?!

Axxess never bothered to inform customers that there was a change !!!
It irks me to no hell when companies in SA feel they can do whatever they wish to "and to hell with the client" and they have all adopted this "not so subtle technique" of having either 082/0860/0861 call numbers knowing well that clients would not want to ring up a huge bill to try and get to them. No complaints - nothing to worry about. I think consumers should fight back, change service providers immediately, if they get no joy with the current one!

/me waves goodbye to Axxess.
If I wanted IS I would have gone direct to IS.

Bastids!

This really really enrages me. It also explains why I could not connect to anything internet last night, this morning I also had problems, all the time thinking that SAIX DNS server is on the blink.

Well, I gues it's back to WebAfrica then. IS backbone simply does not cut the cake.

Does anyone know if there are any other prepaid adsl ISPs?

Have a look at WebAfrica, they also offer pre-paid.

I had a look at the Axxess site trying to find the announcement that this would happen, but nothing. What I did find in small print is this, on this page http://www.axxess.co.za/basic.php:
* Default account creation will be on the IS Network.
Network preferences can be changed by contacting us at 0861 300 900 or [email protected] for assistance.

Just emailed them 10min ago to change my account back to SAIX. Checked now and all back to normal on SAIX.

what the *@#%8235 are they thinking? just realised now I have an IS ip. I really can't believe they gave no prior warning about this and tried to get away with it silently. This now explains why my browsing is so frikking slow and my e-mails are being bounced for relay by the SAIX smtp server. This is a blundering big @#%235 by them and I have immediately, as of a couple minutes ago, switched all my accounts back to WebAfrica. sorry - this is just pathetic coming from the MyBroadband's People's Choice ISP of the Year for 2008.

If they're planning to use IS on a permanent basis, are they gonna pass the cost savings of the cheaper wholesale IS bandwidth to their customers, or are they gonna charge the same price and increase their profit margins benefiting from the cheaper wholesale prices?

trying to phone them to cancel my one last account, it just rang the first time, now it's just engaged every time.....

Just mailed them complaining that they didn't inform customers, and asking what will happen to my existing prepaid account, and whether I'll get SAIX or IS if I top up. I won't stick with them if it's all IS; even if they switch me back to SAIX, I'm not happy with the way they've gone about this.

And isn't IS bandwidth cheaper? How can they change from SAIX to IS and still charge the same amount?

Same crap here

Our company is using 2x30GB accounts which are not working at the moment. Got an SMS from axxess saying the new nameservers are 168.20.2.2 and 196.14.239.2. Input them on the router but still sweet F%%^&kall is working.

Phoned their help line and it just stays busy. In the meantime the whole company is down and there is no way to reach them.

I am FURIOUS!
