Axxess just Surf accounts

interesting offer from axxess, this would be great for small office from home.

I see: No FUP, but slowing down on torrents, newsgroups, hosting service. But it also says ideal for unlimited downloads, youtube, skype etc.

This is nice. Getting ADSL for my wifes small business for her clients to use and this is tempting as I do not want to police their usage (she has a small hair salon)

This'll probably be perfect for your wife... unless the costumers want to download movies while they get their hair cut, lol...

Hi there,
I'm currently on Openweb's uncapped Lite account and have done +-31gigs this
month. How much do you think I could safely do on your just Surf uncapped
account option?....

Hi xxxxx,
Well you could do 31 gigs easily on the just uncapped accounts but not on the just surf accounts, the just surf accounts are only for browsing the net and emailing, any sort of downloading would be shaped on those accounts. Where as on the just uncapped is more for downloading files. Hope this helped.
Thanks

Regards,
xxxxxxxx

Will you be able to listen to ONline radio, watch youtube and play games on this account?

Doubt it as that'll probably use more than 5 gigs and you will be accused of "downloading". They are hoping people won't use more than +-5gigs or so just googling around and sending and receiving emails... i.e. its for grannies and the computer illiterate people that don't know how to have fun online... IMO

I asked if windows patches, steam, antivirus and small downloads would be slowed down.

Response:
"any form of downloading will be extremely slow this account is ment just for surfing and emailling if you look in the site it will explain it further there

xxxxxxxx"

So this this is definately a browsing only package!

So the real question is? Openweb or Axxess? I checked OW's website, there is nothing yet.

That's where things get interesting. How they're going to define this account will prove difficult. For instance (theoretically and rhetorically speaking) if I email a whole pile of uncompressed family photos to my parents who have this account, would that be considered abuse? How about if they need to update Windows with the latest service pack that is a few hundred megabytes? What about spending an hour on a video Skype call to the cousin across the world?

Ask Axxess and they will probably blame IS and then ignore further questions.

By creating an account like this with vague or an absent FUP they generate further problems.

Try the "Click here for more information" part:

Q: How will Windows patches, updates, online gaming and gaming updates work with this account? Will it be throttled like Rapidshare or Torrents etc.?

A: It will work at the same speed as browsing, email, ftp, etc. Unless the updates are being fetched via one of the throttled services like P2P (torrent) software applications and Newsgroups. Or One Click Hosting services like Rapidshare or Megaupload.

I have a 384k line and I'm not too interested in downloading stuff so thought I would give this a try since R99 to cover all the browsing and gaming I may want to do is pretty sweet.

I get pings of 50 to local servers and 215 or so to EU servers on HoN. This is roughly the same latencies I had before this account on this 384k line possibly slightly better. I haven't had a chance to play any games yet and I am at work now so can't test till later.
HoN and SC2 are pretty much what I play at the moment so will post how it fares later along with a speedtest.
In the meantime I have just left Steam to install a game I bought recently and haven't had the bandwidth to install and that is coming down at pretty much line speed (40kB/s).

I can't seem to find it again but during the process of signing up it did mention something about freezing this price for life if you sign up now so not sure if this price is just a temporary special price or what.

So far it seems pretty good for what I want however the person I spoke to on the phone at Axxess did say there aren't many people on the account yet so there won't be much or any shaping.

pfft, just keep telling everyone the accounts are crap, then no one will sign up :p

Always a catch.

There isn't a catch. They quite clearly state that there will be shaping and what will be shaped. Provided they stick to what they say they are going to shape then that is fine with me.

Played some HoN last night and the account worked perfectly fine. It might be slightly better then the account I was using before but that is very much subjective.
Didn't try any SC2 last night but I did let it download the latest patch and that came down without appearing to be shaped.
Download through Steam didn't have any issues, I got about 4gb in 24 hours. This includes me pausing the download for a couple hours whilst I played stuff. My line can only handle doing one thing at a time.

Speedtest result is below.

All of this can change though as people begin to sign up for the account and contention ratios warrant them to start shaping but from their explanation on the site I would expect all these services to remain unshaped except possibly downloads through steam.
