Is it me or my imagination that since Axxess changed certain accounts to IS etc the service is slower.

Now before anyone says have the account converted back to SAIX. I have already done that but I still feel the account is sluggish.

Is it just me or is it time for me to move to Webafrica

SAIX bandwidth with any of the ISP's are the same speed. They can't control that. ;)

well im on the uncapped express + account, and its being going strong since inception...

I've had one hiccup, but it was resolved quickly and I was back to full line speed in no time.

worth mentioning that browsing on this account is noticably more sluggish than my webafrica account... dunno why exactly, but its just like that...

:)

My Axxess (1GB prepaid shaped) has also been very noticeably slower the past few days...

Throughput seems fine (40kB/s on my 384 line), but the initial connection takes forever to establish. It seems as though the DNS lookups take really long:
Code:
$ time host www.amazon.com

www.amazon.com has address 207.171.166.252

real 0m10.006s
user 0m0.002s
sys 0m0.004s

I've tried using other DNS hosts too, but it seems to make no difference... This happens on my Mac and my PC (in Windows and in Linux), and I've heard of other people also complaining about Axxess speed the past few days.

Normally Axxess is awesome, just been the past few days that something is amiss... I see my Axxess account also routes to IS, but I'm not sure whether thats new or has always been that way (never really checked it before).

That's relatively new. Looks like you missed the "end of the world" thread about it here ;)

My line speed has a habit of dropping from 4096 to 3300-3700 daily, I get download speeds (HTTP) of max 20kbps. I'm on SAIX unshaped, and not sure who I should complain to :(

If your Line speed drops then its a Telkom problem, are you seeing the connection speed on the modem changing if so then call Telkom as lines are there issue. If you are having a problem with bandwidth then you call your internet service providor.

Linoman said something about having your Axxess account converted back to SAIX... How do you go about doing that?

Log a request with Axxess to change it, either call them or email them.

I have my Axxess prepaid account back on SAIX for a few days and a normal voucher account on IS, and as far as I'm concerned the IS is faster at any time of day on my connection so far.

I get the same thing! Takes forever to 'find' the site, but once it's 'found' its really quick. Sometimes I'll even get time-outs. This seems to be mostly international websites. - I'm on Semi-shaped

It is for sure slower, not sure if it is my line. Seems to be with international browsing though!

FYI: so I finally logged an Axxess support ticket about this, asking them to move me back to the SAIX network. They responded very very quickly, and moved me back to the SAIX network without questions, and now my DNS lookups are sub 200ms again and everything is nice and snappy again...

Glad to hear you got it all sorted out!

I've had my Express + account for two months now and it works normally fine. I had quite a few router issues ( #@@$!@# Eskom and their power dips, popping a router ) but my line has never dropped in speed ( I know thats the Telkom side, let me finish ) unless it was a total disconnect.

I have experienced a few time this past week and especially this weekend where the account has failed terribly. Less than 30k a sec on a download, bandwidth test returning 1.5 - 2.5 Mbps throughput @ best with nothing else on the line. But the worst is that I love playing with streaming audio/video ie: Joost and YouTube and these could not synch properly at all.

I'm not knocking Axxess as I suspect that its a IS issue when it happens and judging by the response that HTC got I should really notify them next time this happens and they'll help out.

Remember also guys, theres a lot of infrastructure upgrades going on around the country as well at the moment. Nearly everywhere I look, cable is being laid so hopefully its maybe just a slow down before the gold rush :)

I'm considering getting Axxess Express+ and I am also hoping to use streaming services like iPlayer, Hulu etc extensively. So I'm very concerned about the problems you have experienced streaming. Was it isolated to one weekend or does it occur often enough to make streaming regularly impossible?

I use the Axxess ADSL Now shaped account and it seems to be fine. If you want some real k@k, go to SAOL.

It is normally fine, I have to give them that and I suspect factors outside of direct Axxess influence. If you can afford it and a 4meg line, go for it as it opens up a lot in streaming content. Also I confirmed with them that it's month to month, so if you find it unacceptable just cancel, your not held to a contract. I would say 95% uptime versus 5% problem, although keep in mind I'm talking specifically about the non-threshold period from 8pm-8am.

Thanks, thats good to know. Would only use it in the non-threshold time. Now if only I was able to get SuperSport some other way then I could get rid of DSTV!
