Axxess vs Afrihost 4mbs Uncapped

Afrihost all the way - bigger network = more to play with in terms of capacity. Generally just better :D

IMHO, this upgrade that just happened up north for AH is a MTN upgrade, so not specific to AH but to all ISP's using MTN, in which case, include Axxess, and OW etc, so not really better, just different.

I agree with wingnut771. A few of my friends using normal Uncapped accounts with Axxess are reporting nice speeds over the past few days. And they live in Joburg. As for myself I use a Business Uncapped account from Axxess and it's always been flying 24/7 :D

Would I be shaped if I play a lot of online games and stream a lot, along with just normal steam downloads/updates? I usually schedule big downloads and torrents for when I go to bed. Looking at a home uncapped account.

Not sure how Open Web is included here. Have had multiple confirmations from MTN that OpenWeb are not on their services.

On our service you won't ever be shaped on gaming or streaming, regardless of how much data you move. Not sure if that's the same with Axxess :)

OW use multiple backbones MTN being one of them AFAIK as I'm sure I've seen it being mentioned in the OW thread before, so, yes, a bit of an assumption regarding OW, I concede to that, but not for you changing the subject.

Hi

My MWEB is finally being cancelled by the end of February with their BS one month notice policy (on a month-to-month service).

Also still deciding between Afrihost and Axxess. Does anyone know exactly what the differences are? The one thing I see so far that's making me lean more towards Afrihost, is that AfriMan is quite active on all these threads, and I have yet to see Axxess on here?

I'm going to start with a 2mbps home uncapped bundle....but will move to a 4mbps later on when I get a raise. Just not sure why Afrihost is R100 more per month?

Lastly, when do I need to start signing up with Afrihost/Axxess for them to take over my line etc for the end of Feb...so that I can start with them from 1st of March?

PS I mostly use my internet for gaming, the occasional YouTube and Netflix. Maybe do about 100GB - 200GB a month. Is this still in the accepted range? I.e. I won't be throttled?

Thanks in advance!

My bad, just got corrected that OpenWeb resell Axxess - so I guess they might have some MTN accounts.

Sorry, did not know about that until today :(

There is an Axxess rep here, she is maybe a little less active on threads but always available - TheAxxessLady :)

If you keen on trying us out, sign up for a Free Gb and test drive the network :)

I find with Axxess Netflix and Hulu buffers a lot after 6pm in the evenings. Does anyone have the same issue?? Does anyone know what the AH experience is with Streaming Hulu and Netflix after 6pm?? I will move to AH if it's better.

Why not grab a Free 1gig Afrihost account to test?

Good be exchange congestion.

We don't do trial accounts at all. But you can PM me for a signup discount for your first month - which is actually a lot more awesome (becuase I know you'll want to stay with us) ;)

We don't shape any streaming services like Hulu and Netflix. It does depend a lot on which DNS provider you use as well, but we generally get pretty good reports :)

So I've decided to try out the Axxess free 3GB account to see what it would be like and this is the speedtest I've done
3302206360.png
Is this normal speeds for a 4mb at 23:15? Tested it without having extra applications or websites open.
Here is modem stats:

Connection Status Connected
Us Rate (Kbps) 512
Ds Rate (Kbps) 4096
US Margin 12
DS Margin 15
Trained Modulation ADSL_G.dmt
LOS Errors 0
DS Line Attenuation 29
US Line Attenuation 16
Peak Cell Rate 1207 cells per sec
CRC Rx Fast 0
CRC Tx Fast 0
CRC Rx Interleaved 0
CRC Tx Interleaved 0
Path Mode Fast Path

Tried the WebAfrica trial as well:

From what I've seen(not sure if there is a problem with MTN or if IS is better) Youtube videos tend to buffer a lot more on the Axxess account @ 720p compared to WA account.

Will test both accounts again tomorrow morning along with the 1gb account from Afrihost as soon as they confirm my ID validation.

My 10c worth - I have just cancelled my Axxess 4MB uncapped account. All was well until a few weeks ago but now VPN is being shaped out of existence - more than 98% down all times of the day and night. The solution, according to Axxess is to upgrade my account to a business account. I think this is a unscrupulous way of getting more money out of me.

I'm also cancelling Axxess Uncapped

I have a 10mbps uncapped service and I'm not a heavy user - 60-70gb per month. Regularly finding the line running at 1-2 mbps. My dsl only runs at 6mbps.

I tested the speed using a capped 1gb freebie, and the speedtest speed was a steady 5mbps. I'm going to go the unshaped capped route as one doesn't get what one is paying for when using uncapped at Axxess.

So you're going for a 100GB unshaped capped account? How much is that monthly?

Hello Xhaphan

Apologies for the late reply.

"Lastly, when do I need to start signing up with Afrihost/Axxess for them to take over my line etc for the end of Feb...so that I can start with them from 1st of March?"
You can transfer your line at any time you want, we will only start billing you once your line has actually moved over to ourselves (pro rata) and then Telkom should also pass you a pro rata credit on your next invoice for the days in the month your DSL Line was not with them.

"PS I mostly use my internet for gaming, the occasional YouTube and Netflix. Maybe do about 100GB - 200GB a month. Is this still in the accepted range? I.e. I won't be throttled?"
We no not "throttle/manage" your account based on the usage on the account but rather based on the network availability. Our AUP states- "During peak network times, we give priority to real time services (browsing, email, streaming etc), high bandwidth services such as NNTP, Peer-to-Peer and Torrents (and similar) will receive less priority. "

If you have any other questions please feel free to email me [email protected].
