Backup software?

I am a home user and have used the windows back up program for a few years now. I have just bought a 3 TB external seagate hard drive and have tried for over a week to get the back up to work. At best I get about half way and it then bombs out.

Could this be a hard drive issue? I have reformatted the HD?

I really don't want to pay USD 100 for a program when there is a free option that has worked for me for years.

I am on windows 7. I have a 2TB hard drive and my old back up was done on a 2 TB external HD but every few weeks I would have to delete the back up and start again as the external hard drive would get full, hence the upgrade to a 3TB HD

But seriously for Windows 7, doesn't it come with backup software? I know it's not the fastest around, but it is free and you can just leave it over night to image the entire PC.
Is it doing incremental, differential or full backups each time? If one of the former how often does it consolidate them?

This is what I am using at present but there is a problem with my seagate 3TB external hard drive in that it can't do the system image - comes up with an I/O error and I can't get a fix for this
