Bad Driving thread

Experienced my first excessive roadraged driver today, to the point where he brought me to a standstill on the n1 south just after william nicol and then chased me down and cut me off on the malibongwe offramp. Running after my car through traffic with some object and banged my windscreen. And he wanted to try again at the oxford robots on malibongwe but I drove off into the inner roads.

Incredibly excessive for a fight all because his kia picanto was able to fit in the little following space between my vehicle and the car in front and I raised my hand (not a bird, just, what are you doing).

I was evasive the entire time, but there where moments with lots of traffic and the only thing to was to sit like a duck and wait for the attack or drive over him to get away. I was alone this time and decided to let it get close to an attack while waiting for gaps in traffic
.
But if one has family, the only way out is to drive and knock over the aggressor. Which becomes attempted murder and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

What are one's options really in situations like these? Its just someone who has more ego and wanted a fight/to cause damage.
Take a video/picture of his number plate and him. Report it at your closest police station

Get a dashcam

Typically we can only try not to let these situations bring us down to the same level of overly emotional response. If possible try not to show any signs, since the other person's aggression may be triggered. If you can, ignore them, let them drive away, or move away yourself. The repercussions of interacting with aggressive idiots can be horrific.

It is always a good idea to keep your cool, even when other drivers drive poorly. :)

Invest in a dashcam like @S.Claus suggested.

Sorry to hear, it's better to avoid conflict all together, some crazy people out there. Report the incident at a police station, hopefully you have a plate. It will be on record then.

Hectic, even without a dashcam one can still try to record video footage using a cellphone (when stopped, not whilst driving, although leaving your phone to record just the audio could prove useful) but the issue is more imminent danger from an insane person wanting to attack and cause damage.

Stop. Wait till he gets out. Run him over.

Then you get the rap for murder. Nope.
My post was slightly tongue in the cheek, but if the person is legitimately attacking you, and you feel threatened (he has an object he's attacking you with), remember you're sitting in the biggest weapon in the fight. Use it. It's not different to using a gun for private defense.

I understood what you were trying to say :) tongue in cheek and all that.

And I sincerely hope not to land in such situations.

Driving to work this morning approaching a robot, green for me and other cars going in the same direction.
With a moron in a white Fiat Punto a about 2-car lengths in front of me deciding he is suddenly going to stop at the green robot to drop someone off. Luckily there were no one on my right-hand side otherwise it could have been ugly

Hazard lights (or as I call them 'kakaanjaagliggies'). Do people drivers not realize that when they use their hazard lights they cannot indicate and you have no idea WTF they are doing?
Carmakers should disable hazard lights while the vehicle is in motion.

How else are people going to tell you "I have my hazards on so I can do what ever I want"

Some VW models actually allow you to use indicators even though the hazards are on.

This, IMHO, is one of the biggest reasons why people drive as bad as they do, they know they can do what they want they won't be caught, because instead of policing moving violations pigs like this are sitting in the shade catching people doing 71 in a 60 zone.

I still wonder at the legality of those because there's no one there.

On westcoast road the other day, an officer set up his camera between the myciti lanes, here about:
743307
Bushes are a lot taller now (google's pic is Sep 2017), so you won't be able to see the camera beforehand, and the cop was on the other side of the road dealing with a car that was overloaded (like 10 people in a bakkie, I was sitting in traffic on that side).
According to the City of Cape Town’s traffic and speed camera report, speed cameras will now have to be made clearly visible and used in areas to improve road safety. Not as a cash cow. Furthermore, the new regulations states that:
  • A warning sign should be placed not more than 1km from the stationed area, in the direction being enforced;
  • Speed cameras, including mobile camera units, must be visible to approaching or departing motorists from where the enforcement is done;
  • Traffic officers are prohibited from using concealed netting and other deceptive tactics;
  • Where a fixed camera has been installed, it must be painted yellow in full, with reflective sheeting.
“We will now be doing operations where it is visible to people. The recording of motorists in traffic vehicles or hidden away is stopped. On the issue of fines, we need to look at the justice system, because the fines we issue don’t help the situation,” said JP Smith.

Smith, who is a mayoral committee member for safety, security and social services in Cape Town also said that Cape Town does not currently hide the speed cameras in any way, and that he himself was on board with changing the policy with regards to not hiding them.
I do wonder if you can argue that it being placed so low down, being green in a green field can be considered going against the rules of being visible.

Then my other question is, if unmanned/no one being there, what stops some other person tampering with it? R27 there by woodbridge is a cop that constantly sleeps in his car after setting up the speed trap, pedestrians do walk past at times. Could one argue that the officer has to prove it wasn't tampered with in that time?
CHAPTER 3
REQUIREMENTS FOR PROSECUTION WITH REGARD TO SPEED MEASUREMENTS BY LASER EQUIPMENT

3.1. Preparation for mobile SME’s - Prior to the machine being used, the following checks must be carried out and recorded -

(a) vertical and horizontal scope alignment test, at a distance of at least 100 metres must be done at the start and end of each speed measurement shift and whenever the equipment is moved to a new location.

(b) A fixed distance and zero velocity test shall be done -

(i) The validation distance must be at least 100 metres.
(ii) The distance error must not be more than + 0,2 metres.
(iv) No speed-reading must be displayed when taking a measurement of a stationary object.

3.2. Site selection and setup for laser - setup and installation shall –

(a) at all times whilst being operated be mounted on a firm and stable surface.

3.3. Manual operational procedures - the following must be adhered to whilst operating the equipment -

(a) that no measurement is locked beyond 500 metres;
(b) when viewed from the SME there must be a clear, visible separation between the vehicle target and any other visible vehicle;
(c) the measured distance mentioned in 3.3(a) must be recorded on the charge sheet, if no photographic evidence is available.

The above bold is interesting, because I had a fine arguing about that, one back and forth every 6 months for 2 years, not sure what has happened, still waiting on a summons.
