Bandwidth Disappearing

Beware of those P2P stuff...they have a habit of sharing your downloaded stuff to the world by default. If you have not actually turned off this, then your P2P is probably nicely open and sharing certain folders...probably that 14MB file you originally downloaded is being shared back.

Ares probably auto start when your windows loads up, and that would explain alot of where all your data is going :). Don't underestimate upload bandwidth....

The fact that it is even running [while i assume you're not downloading on Ares] tells me you are probably a nice little seed for other P2P downloaders..

Anyway, if you do not have Windows 7 , i recommend you either get a firewall with more statistics showing all connections, their speeds, how much they are up/downloading. Win7 have this now built in [so you don't need to do netstat etc] .

Otherwise get Netlimiter , the beta should be free. It also shows you details, even log every application and what it downloaded , so you can view over a month and see how much Firefox / Windows Updates etc actually downloaded.

If you got Win7 ->
Open Task Manager -> Performance Tab -> click the "Resource Monitor" button.

Thanks! Yes its only running in the background I normally keep the shared folder empty but I need to think twice now!
Will turn it off while I'm not downloading.

Thanks again!

Hey Guys

I wanted to try give some feedback on the issues you having.

If you losing the bandwidth there are a few ways moving forward:

a) Reset your password, our accounts do allow 5 concurrent connections and perhaps someone else has accessed your details.
b) Ensure you have put a password on your router for wireless access
c) Ask for a list of numbers accessing your account, Afrihost or myself can provide that.
d) Organise a program like the ones mentioned above. Afrihost can not do anything if you unable to substantiate your claim.
e) Ensure Windows Live Update and P2P software is not using your bandwidth. Sometimes these programs load in the background and upload data without you knowing.

I understand this is basic advice, however once all of the above is done and you still having problems we can take it from there.

Which password....router or clientzone?

Thanks, Fransman

On a side note, if you're not coming right with Netlimiter. Netlimiter is still my favorite, but currently the statistics module [the one logging bandwidth usage] are disabled in their Windows 7 compatible version, and older versions crash on Win 7.

Here's another one i ran across and using, CFOS Speed http://www.cfos.de/speed/cfosspeed_e.htm

Its main focus is traffic shaping [i.e. giving you ability to set priority of HTTP vs P2P protocols or prioritize PING vs BANDWIDTH] , however it functions more on a protocol level and not really per application.

Anyway the part i use most is the Traffic Monitor, got all the statistics logging , right down to application level [i.e. how much did Firefox use vs Internet Explorer]. The protocol/shaping statistics is quite interesting to check too, specifically the ability to show you a graph of http-downloading vs http-browsing vs p2p usage in real time.

Most other bandwidth meters out there only log "total up and downloads" and show you per day/month/week etc. If you ever use[d] Netlimiter/CFOSspeed you'll quickly realise it's not sufficient to only know 2GB dissappeared on a specific day, you'd actually want to see what used it ,and both these proggies can show you historically what happened [i.e. typical example: got a new online game or application which used more bandwidth than anticipated. If you only realise this a week later, you might never know what it was]

Hi Diabolus and others
I think I found my problem: Orbit P2P downloader (how it installed I have no idea)

Originally I installed Orbit Downloader but yesterday I monitored the traffic via Netlimiter and yes Orbit P2P was going mad I then un-installed Orbit completely re-installed afterwards but firewalled the Orbit P2P section and also killed the connection in Netlimiter.....downloaded at least 1.238GB and the Upload was only 23MB.
Thanks for all the info and assistance and your patience!

Hi

I am also experiencing bandwidth that disappear.
Service provider is Hellkom.

My 2 gigg was caped on the 11th Dec while it normally lasts for the month. I brought an additional gigg on the 17th and today that is gone too.

Firewalls are on. Using XP and a Mecer wireless router.

This is the first time it is happening and I am clueless about what to do but will try and follow the advise in this thread.

What is Orbit P2P and how do I find it?

I guess easiest for you is to install Netlimiter : http://www.netlimiter.com/betas.php

And then see what is using bandwidth. Orbit P2P is just one of many P2P programs, so not necissarily your problem.

I've noticed with my parents who recently upgraded to Win 7 + Office 2007 they are using ALOT of bandwidth, guess on what? Windows Updates.

Office 2007 SP1 & SP2 is 500MB right there...

Problem is, Win 7 is clever enough to now look for updates on right about -everything- on your Pc. Drivers/All Microsoft Software and if you've blindly turned it all on, you will be downloading an update every night .
Also people don't realise new OS = all your software updates from scratch. So you might've been updating Office/SQL/Adobe/Firefox/IE/JAVA on Win XP/Vista over a period of time , now you move to Win 7 and reinstalled everything..suddenly all these things updates immediately.

Hi diabolus, I've already removed ARES P2P from my PC and I wasn;t aware that Orbit Downloader had a built-in P2P client. Any other download program that I can use for faster downloads? And not something that runs in the background.
Thanks again to all!

Its just odd...I play css and yes it chows cap...I use 4 gig from my saix and is acounts in about 3 weeks. Then I switch to my afrihost account 1 gig and use it up in less than 5 hours of css...kinda weird but ah well.

just some information which might be of help and use to people here and i have noticed this is happening once again to me.

from february to august this year i noticed that i was using my 5 gigs telkom account by the middle of the month, which was unusual. each month i would top up and this 1 gig top up would be used extremely fast. by august i'd had enough because i had topped up the saturday 12.30 and by the sunday morning 8 a.m. i was capped. i phoned telkom only for the technician to let slip that someone, not me, had downloaded at 12 midnight. now i had already switched off all computers by 11 saturday night so there was no computer activity at in this house. oops.

i then decided enough was enough and laid a charge of theft against telkom at the police station. phoned telkom and gave them the case number and told them that if they thought they were getting away with it they should think again. of course with the system it never did go to court but the sudden excessive usage each month stopped.

now i discover this month i have used in excess of 15 gigs. and this is money i have spent on axess bandwidth that i have bought as well. i think that it is time to notify telkom that i am not one to mess with. their little telkom employees are messing with the wrong person i WILL carry this one through this time. i will not tolerate the theft of my bandwidth whatsoever.

Celine that is a good point perhaps we should all do this so that they become aware of us looking into our usage. I have been looking into the different packages and thanks to all there is some great stuff here.
The one that I do not get though is the account not even loaded onto the router loosing bandwidth?

Hi Celine, as your SAPS case number should still be valid, report your bandwidth theft to the Telkom fraud line at 0860 124 000.

It is not hosted by Telkom employees but by an Auditing company (either PWC or EY, iirc) and every call is logged and tracked by them. They will co-ordinate the internal investigation and ensure that there is no cover up. You are also given a ref number and can follow up on the progress.

Guilty Party

just some information which might be of help and use to people here and i have noticed this is happening once again to me.

I have NO idea WHY you think that it is Telkom employees that are "stealing" your bandwidth / CAP ????

( I assume that you are with Telkom ISP ??? )

You can go to the secure site and change your login details -- password

Of course this will not help if your router is unsecured.

This is a standard perp thing to find an unsecured router telnet into it steal the ISP user name and password
and
then use those on their OWN router late at night -- thus using up YOUR cap
or
NOT even late at night as Telkom allow you TWO concurrent connections.
ie
YOU and your SHADOW user can be online at the same time ( or can they ??? -- moggie will clear that one up for us :) )

In any case there is no absolute reason that Telkom or it's employees are responsible for your dissapearing CAP.
( unless of course you have proof to the contrary )

Yes, they can.

If they really wanted to "steal CAP" then they would not bother with a residential ADSL line, they'll head for those nice corporate customer fibres!!

Just another interesting way to check the download loss. I have been keeping track of my HDD sizes as I am doing a clean up and on the day the 1 gb when missing none of the drives increased in size so how do you explain that. Definitely no MS updates or the likes???

If someone is using your uid/password then it would not impact your own hdd size, but theirs. They are not accessing your PC, rather your unprotected ADSL modem/router to obtain your uid/pw and then they log in from their own location.
