Bandwidth Disappearing

WHAT exactly do you want ?????????

People have mentioned a number of things to try / test

Have you tried them ALL ????

It is a bit like Skydiving -- YOU have to be responsible for your OWN parachute.

During an active session note YOUR IP address
then phone your ISP give them this info plus your Telephone number and ask them to check what is going on
and
monitor your account.

Get personal firewall software ( FREE )

Get usage monitoring software ( FREE )

READ these forums to find out where you get this stuff ( and how to use it )

Yes I have all in place and have tried all suggestions even the switching off and using my Web Africa account to do the same daily work. Then switching back to test the afrihost and just like that the bandwidth disappears. I have in fact been keeping a close look at all my activities and compared them and can find no difference in load on my systems so why then do I use so much more when logged in using Afrihost vs any of my other ISP's?

fionab, did you contact your ISP, or did it your self to limit the amount of concurrent connections to only 1?

Suggestion

I don't follow.

There is an intimation on the part of the affected parties that their bandwidth is "dissapearing" ONLY on their Afrihost accounts.

I made the tongue in cheek observation that this "missing" bandwidth is what is now making up the Afrihost Marketing and Adveretising budget.

Which you will remember is what they said they were using to "subsidise" the cheap GIGS

DO you understand NOW

Some input from someone from Afrihiost would put peoples minds at ease :)

The logs are only as good as the code that generated them.
Suggesting that they are infallible is absurd.;)

OK -- If you say so.

"Logs" don't lie -- People do ........

Has anyone received detailed logs from Afrihost?
My previous ISP used to provide a signon which I used to access my stats via the IS website. Now if Afrihost could do that, then may be I'd be more inclined to start doing all the troubleshooting methods, but as things stand now, I'm wondering about that marketing budget mentioned earlier.

Have you tried entering your Afrihost details?

I was about to open a new thread when I saw this one!

Over the last few days my Afrihost cap has been disappearing in huge chunks (about 200-300mb at a go). At first I thought it may be the kids and Youtube, until I checked the NetLimiter log on my computer and found it's coming from me. (Sorry kids!).

The errant app seems to be Firefox. Watching Netlimiter I can see it downloading and uploading huge quantities of something, although only one or two tabs are open and they look harmless. Close them down individually and nothing slows down on Netlimiter. Close Firefox and the fun stops immediately!

Screen grab of NetLimiter. Important point - nothing appears to be loading in the browser while this is going on.

I'm running a virus scan at the moment to see if any malware shows up.

Someone mentioned setting up the router properly. Any setting in particular, based on this screen grab above?

lotus, all the 64.233.169.* IP addresses shown in your NetLimiter belongs to google.com: eg. http://www.robtex.com/ip/64.233.169.91.html

It would still be a good idea to check for malware with Spybot Search & Destroy and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

Thanks Pada, that makes me think it's initiated by this page that loads at start-up

Funny thing is, it was closed when the NetLimiter grab was taken, which makes me think that a fault may exist in Firefox (using ver 3.6 Beta 5).

You're right, they usually do update every few minutes. But since they were set up about a year ago, they've never misbehaved - usually a couple of Mb over the course of a day.The only things I can think of that have changed recently are the Beta 5 version of Firefox, and an update for Adblock Plus.

As I mentioned, the odd thing is that this page was closed when the "firestorm" took place.

Maybe I should just remove this page from auto-loading and watch it for a few days.

I wonder, though, if any of these other Afrihost complaints can be tracked back to this sort of thing. In my case I don't think this has anything to do with Afrihost.
