Bandwidth price cuts

I must admit our media "reporting" on the same topics OVER and OVER and OVER again is getting a little LAME!!!!

mmmm So it seems Cybersmart is cashing in while it can, with its "Grow for Life" Cap Option, very clever i like, is nice

oddly enough i was thinking about this and begining to doubt that they really will reduce the cost at first. Maybe its experience of 'other' failed promises that prevent me from accepting it as possibility

will take just under a yr to get a gig.. for the cost i dunno if its worth it

Most of it hinges on the current Altech case as well... if Altech wins and everybody gets the go-ahead, then the scenery will change...

I hate these stories. You think that they are saying, "Prices are dropping now" coz thats what the title suggests. But its always just more of the same rubbish. Annoying, really.

Maybe you don't remember or your perspective is based on a very short timeframe.

In 2004 and into 2005, a 512k "adsl line" used to cost R680 a month, excluding bandwidth, and excluding the telkom phone line rental. The only other options were Sucktech or, er, dial-up.

Change is slow, but it is happening.

I refuse to read any article about bandwidth prices, unless that title of the article is something along the lines of "Last Weeks Massive Price Drop is welcomed by everyone"

Other than this being 99% the same as all the other articles promising a wondrous future, this is the first article that seems to realise the national infrastructure also needs competition/upgrading.

"However, it is necessary to note that competition in national long distance and local access is also necessary, since the price reduction in international bandwidth will only be part of the overall cost structure," said Neilson.

i spoke to the manager of a fiber company who are supplying Telkom with new backbone fiber for their datacenter in bellville and he says they are spending over R800 mil for their new IPTV infrastructure, so maybe maybe.

So I asked him what about Neotel, he reckons he had a meeting with a big wig and Mr big wig asked him how much he would contribute to his R9000 flat in Table View if he got him the contract.

He was in disbelief and walked out. :)

The question is will prices really drop?

If you look at the shareholders of the SAT3 cable, it’s the same group of telko operators that are so notorious for bring down telecommunication pricing. (Telkom , Vodacom, MTN and their new “pal” Neotel. …Smells like a “cartel” to me?
These guys simply are not interested in anything other than shareholder value. This you may argue is understandable…but will there really be a substantial cost reduction?

The prices will come down but when is the problem, they keep telling us to wait for the future. It feels like that old song, if tommorow never comes

Heard it...More hot air that goes cold.

Load of crap. When it "happens" I'll change my opinion.

exactly and even if they do drop prices it will be in the staggered approach so they can rake in more. Why else would these same companies be complaining of 'too' many cables if they agreed upon a maximum base charge that would not over run profits.

I cant wait on the price war between Telkom and Neotel. It wil start soon with the number portability of anologue land lines between Neotel and Telkom. This law was passed a while ago and Neotel caught Telkom off guard. Watch this space.

I doubt number portability will have any significant impact on data prices prior to the landing of any undersea cable.
