Bandwidth prices hurt MultiChoice

Gee thanks telkom.. Yet another victim for you to boast about.

Proudly south african my left nut...

It is certainly sad to see local content made for local consumers being moved offshore because of the high local bandwidth costs. It is understandable that a website specializing in video content need massive bandwidth and will hence move overseas to cut bandwidth costs, but the effect is that expensive SAT3 bandwidth is used by consumers which no-one really wants.

I think Gatecrasher summed it up quite nicely in his question at the conference: “The biggest barrier to the growth of the local internet industry is the exorbitant bandwidth costs associated with local website hosting. It is particularly crippling to the growth of rich, innovative local content and web 2.0 development. As things stand, website success spells instant financial disaster for local developers.”

And while most valuable content sits overseas broadband pricing will also only decrease with the decrease in international bandwidth pricing. More on-net content for broadband providers makes so much sense that it is surprising that they don’t make hosting on their network very affordable…

Some things are not clear to me.

Does this mean that there is still sufficient bandwidth available on the SAT3 cable that Multichoice can guarantee a satifactory experience to thousands of people watching video on demand?

Is the signal distribution for this not done via sattellite? Where and for what do they need this massive bandwidth?

I'm sure that our current options of connectivity as consumers would also be a problem to view the content on demand.

According to Vodacom Business’ Wally Beelders users can expect this scenario to change within the next 12 to 18 months, with massive bandwidth price reductions on the cards.

so, bear the pain for the next 12 - 18 months? i think wally has been making similar promises when he was henchman at telscum

kinda the same song and dance for a while now. more bandwidth is immanent

if they host if outside SA, this mean people trying to access it would have to pay more with international bandwidth

I think that is a luxury that Multichoice simply has to do away with because of the prohibitive costs associated with local hosting.

This is the online version of their TV content, not the normal Satelitte content available via decoder and dish on TV.

This is all governments doing, well done more local jobs lost because they are lining their own pockets!

As I have said hundreds of times before, IDIOTS!

Okay, just want to make sure I've got this right, so Multichoice complain that Hosting is too expensive in SA because bandwidth is expensive in SA, so they're going to host overseas. Thus making the expensive international bandwidth problem, their consumer's problem, rather than their own?

Mmmm big guns hurting? I think they make more than enough money with their expensive subcription fees!

Well it was a nice service, while it lasted!

Not of use if its hosted overseas, we can rather get other premium content from other sources....

It worked because it was local, that is all.

DRM is a bitch, the moving of the servers possibly means no more backdated shows too. Nice one.

I think we will be seeing this more and more big companies taking business out of the country due to our insufficient/overpriced infrastructure

This makes the service next to useless for me. My costs go from R10 a gig for local to R60+ a gig for international now. The speeds will probably drop too cause I was getting the full 4 mb/s off my line when they were local but International is not so fast...

Very few people will use it now because of expensive int bandwith.

Yea... thanks Telkom. Thanks for destroying jobs, destroying dreams. Keep it up!

Exactly.

So now they'll build a model that has low costs for themselves but are going to be wondering why noone ever uses it. Perhaps the Multichoice mob should employ someone with some intelligence.

Don't worry, they repeat everything so often so you don't need to view it on the web!
