Johannesburg – eNCA’s senior news anchor Andrew Barnes’s mockery of Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga’s pronunciation has led to a storm of outrage on social media among South Africans.

On Wednesday, Barnes made fun of Motshekga during a live broadcast after she had mispronounced the word “epitome”.

South Africans immediately took to social media to express outrage, with some pointing to the fact that the television news anchor had failed to pronounce Motshekga’s name correctly....

Word for the day : epitome

Mocking? Making fun of? No laughing and pointing here... That was a correction in the form of a smack-down.

But this Barnes oke can't even pronounce Motshekga. I find it hilarious if you're correcting someone when you struggle to pronounce their name.

This country is burning but we focus on this rubbish, viva viva lol

Will be top trending on twitter soon no doubt.

Lol. Have you heard her speak? I doubt she'd be able to pronounce Andrew Barnes properly either.

And as minister of basic education, she should be able to pronounce basic words correctly.

We're turning on each other like rabid dogs. Must be the heat.

Nothing unusual.

Listen to the 'English' news readers on 702 and 567 and the pronunciation is terrible.

Jewlery, pihano, bedda.... so why should we expect perfection from those who speak English as a second language.

That said, another twitter 'outrage', getting boring now.

Esethu Hasane, a government spokesperson, tweeted: “White @eNCA anchor says ‘someone should have a word with the Basic Edu Min on how to pronounce epitome’. He can’t pronounce her surname.”

Instantly playing the race card.

I don't see anywhere that Barne's commented on anyone's race.

Why do some people in this country immediately take what is a comment on how to speak English as an attack on the colour of their skin?

It's not her 1st language. I experience it everyday. My MD is Mexican and he doesn't pronounce most English words the way they should but no one ridicules him. We all know what he means and that's enough.

Using your logic Barnes should be able to pronounce anything he reports on correctly.

It's an ugly process, but starting to have a real national conversation on race. Uncomfortable yes, but a frankness that has been long overdue.

Aag k@k man, show me one single real world improvement that results from focusing on a "discussion" about race when it's not within the context of actual institutionalized racism, like you know, apartheid that was unanimously thrown to the gutter a generation ago.
Those of us who don't have our heads screwed onto our asses know that "the discussion" is only serving as bait so black folks and progressive apologistic ****ers can point to wrongs and pin it on whitey while the entire population as a whole accomplishes nothing.

As for whitey: don't get pulled into this. Nothing you can ever say would be enough for these people, white, black, brown Social Justice Snowflakes included, Collectivism is and will always be a black hole when it comes to positive change and everyone's limp-dicked agreement towards allowing institutions like employers and government step in to obliterate people for simply saying something on a vapid wave of social media opinions is fcking disgusting and just shows how warped everyone's ideology has become, liberals included, and on both sides of the racial fence.

Anyway, now that freedom of speech is officially dead and our economy is collapsing I don't really give a **** anymore.
I'll just withdraw into my tiny little existence and watch it all burn, there's almost no channels left for people who were deluding themselves into thinking that common sense would prevail.

It grinds my balls too.

Whenever someone in a meeting says Deter-mine I laugh uncontrollably. It has gotten me a few looks before but I mean seriously? They have gone through a minimum of 12 years of school and no one helped them to pronounce determine correctly? There are a few other gems too...

Dude's probably screwed. People looking to make examples in this climate.

He'll apologise, we'll move on... Andrew is't a bad anchor actually, and the pool to replace him from is pretty small. Kinda like daveza pointed out, most field reporters are speaking in a second language.
My biggest worry is Gareth... That boy's going to be picked up by an international agency and he's head and shoulders above everyone at ENCA.
