Bathabile Dlamini Resigns as an MP with Immediate Effect

At least Mildred is open and honest about her decision

Former labour minister Mildred Oliphant says Parliament's benefits structure should be reviewed, as many former ministers have to consider forfeiting half of a loss-of-office gratuity if they are demoted.

In an interview on PowerFm on Thursday morning, Oliphant explained that she resigned as a Member of Parliament, partly to avoid losing benefits at a certain salary level.

What exactly does she want, to retain the salary and benefits of a minister as an MP?

She wants to keep her defined benefits level at the Cabinet member level... so twice what she would get if she became an ordinary backbencher really.

What I don't get is how is it that they are able to get near full salaries when they've only contributed max 5 years at a time. And some even much less than that. Who funds these sloths?

You do.... well all of us taxpayers really.

Final salary/defined benefit pension scheme - very lucrative obviously as it is a guaranteed payout based off a percentage of your final salary. My dad, who is about to retire, has that even though he is in the private sector but as @ToxicBunny said, it is largely a type of pension scheme that does not exist anymore. All the risk has been transferred to the employee from the company. Now it is defined contribution.

Yup that’s what I meant.. defined benefit. This is the same sort of crap which has US fretting over potential/coming debt on the provincial/state and national gov levels on that side.

Rest of plebs have defined contribution schemes and if we lucky we get to choose our provider without tax delay penalty (though I suspect this was changed).

Good riddance! What a joke the ANC has made of itself yet somehow keeps getting the winning votes! You know this clown was corrupt and committed fraud with public funds yet the party cannot hold them accountable?

The gratuity amount is 4 months pensionable salary for each 5 years worked. Pensionable salary is 60% of the total package. For ministers with total annual salary of R2,401,633 pa or R200,136 per month, the pensionable salary is R120,081.

So if you were a minister for 5 years the gratuity is R480,324.

She was a perfect fit for Zuma administration.

Seventeen million social grants, with the threat that the DA would return to apartheid and remove the grants, is enough to convince a lot of voters who have no real idea of what democracy actually is.

Some of the recipients don't have options, especially pensioners, people with disabilities as well as orphans (In my opinion)
