I've figured out that my BlackBerry is using my airtime, NOT my BIS. I spoke to a Vodacom consultant, they told me to check the Advanced Settings > TCP IP and check if APN Settings were enabled (they're not). He can't give me any explanation for why it's eating my airtime, he's activated Service Inhibiting of Internet on my phone to try stop my phone from doing it.

Now my internet is dead slow.

So two questions:

1) Anyone know why it'd be using my airtime and NOT my BIS?
2) Could the service he's activated be further slowing down an already slow service?

Can you explain what exactly you were using that's now slow? What apps / web sites do you normally use?

Some apps use the internet APN (it's the choice of the developer) and not BIS. This will then use your airtime.

Unfortunately there is nothing Vodacom (or even RIM) can do about this, it's up to the developer to decide which APN he uses.

Hi,

I'm using the default browser, BBM, WhatsApp, Twitter (logged in but set not to refresh unless I tell it to), Shazam, BeBuzz Free, BlueSlate Converter, Dictionary.com and Microsoft Tag app. I have the standard Apps installed that come with the phone (MSN messenger, Yahoo, etc) but don't use them.

Sites I check would be Facebook and New24, sometimes Google and Wiki.

They put in place an Internet Service Restricter (to try force my phone to only use BIS), but now my phone's refusing to access sites like FB and News24, but will access Google.

Sigh.

Like jannie said it would be apps using internet for apn.. The once I made bold for u may use INTERNET as a apn rather than using your bb bis

Enable your apn and set it to blackberry.net

Note that some apps and streaming will use normal apn and use airtime

I also had this problem.
First my BIS worked fine on Vodacom. Then slowly I noticed my airtime dissapearing. I used the Vodacom mini statement on 4u to check and sure enough, there were 4c and 10c and 1c and 50c GPRS connections on a daily basis starting to appear.

Got more and more frequent and eventually the Vodacom reps told me that Apps like WhatsApp and Foursquare are not supported on BIS. In fact he gave me a list of all the apps that BIS doesn't pay for anymore. They worked just fine for ages and then one by one starting using airtime instead.

After over a year of fighting with Vodacom about this and over R150 in "stolen" airtime I managed to solve my problem.

I moved to 8ta.

A friend of mine also has this exact same problem. He's on prepaid, he loaded airtime, loaded BIS, and whenever he would access the internet through his browser it would use up his airtime balance.

He even tried loading the Opera browser, and still used up his airtime.

Even tried forcing his APN to - blackberry.net and still used up his airtime.

He even re-flashed his firmware to whatever the latest version was. Maybe he need to re-flash to an older version?

He never got this figured out. He said that he would see the BB icon in the corner and as soon as he would start a browser session, the BB icon would disappear. So basically he was not on BIS anymore. Then when he closed his browser, the BB icon would come back.

Lol, you wondering why its dead slow now? Because bis is throttled through its ass. Remember how we were told bis was slow because of the abusers? Well they stopped them and its still slow.
