BDS vs Woolworths

Much less than that.... between 500-700 was more likely.

And I would guess that a percentage of those had no idea what they were "protesting" about, or were hanging around for scalpers or something of the sort.

Johannesburg - Pro-Palestinian activists’ protests against Woolworths have had little effect on fundraising efforts with US singer Pharrell Williams, the retailer’s CEO said on Wednesday.

"I think we’ve been able to do that regardless of whatever group may protest or whatever any individual may say," Ian Moir told News24 at the Emisebeni Primary School in Soweto. Williams was at the school to plant a tree in its "eduplant" garden.

The retailer had been collaborating with Williams in a series of projects intended to raise money for education and promote "sustainable fashion".

He performed at a concert in Cape Town on Monday night. The organisation Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel (BDS) protested at the concert. It has been leading a campaign to boycott Woolworths products due to the retailer’s trade relations with Israel.

Moir said what they had done with Williams to highlight the importance of education and the environment "stands above that".

"I don’t think [the protests] were that effective and we've been dealing with the BDS protests for a long time. It was a small number [who] protested in Cape Town and I think people understand their point of view," Moir said, adding they were concentrating on their efforts with Pharell.

Pharrell Williams samples his work with Woolies in Soweto

US singer Pharrell Williams visited Emisebeni Primary School in Soweto to see the positive impact his collaboration with Woolworths is having on schools and communities in South Africa.

Williams visit forms part of Woolworths’ strategic collaboration with the musician to highlight educational advancement, environmental awareness and social cohesion.

The retailer aims to raise R100 million for education and to drive awareness of environmental sustainability.
Woolworths Group CEO, Ian Moir, said, “The Woolworths Good Business Journey is the driving force behind our partnership with Pharrell as we aim to raise R100 millions for schools in need across the country and to make sustainability cool for the next generation of South Africans."

How are they raising this money? It's not foreign money but money from SA shoppers paying inflated WW prices for products and service which is becoming worse IMO. Is it not the case?

And why do we need "Pharrell Williams?"

In the era of the tanking Rand we want to employ a US singer? We have no local talent here we could develop or use?

Unless of course Williams is doing all of this pro bono. But that's the ONLY way I'd consider this rational.

For black WW shoppers, ladies and gents, remember this. WW could not find one black SA based performer, to do this. They chose to import a foreigner. Think about it. An SA company in a country of over 50 million has to import a foreigner because it helps their marketing. How about running a comp from local high schools or finding local talent and then building up a new celebrity, whose music we could even export.

We could have a Soweto based performer, whose records would be sold in Chicago and Detroit and such foreign dollars could really boost our economy. Taking money from locals for fundraising is not benefiting the economy at all.

Mold? I don't think so. I only buy my veg from WW. Never had mold.

I knew I should have taken a picture. Yes mold on a cherry tomato in one of those smaller containers of cherry tomatoes. ;)

WW's services are going down. Their staff are becoming more and more rude and incompetent too. Tills locked everywhere and people walking around sending customers half way across the store, staff at Country Road not able to process WW Black vouchers, staff at Country Road forgetting to take off security tags, a less friendly attitude, etc.

Weird in my area its fantastic

The number of people moaning about WW on MyBB can be counted on one hand ...... methinks the problem is with them, not the majority of WW consumers.

Just to point out, I am not pro BDS but do take exception for the amount of WW praising going on here. In my view it's not called for. Seems to be an issue of fanboyism.

False dichotomy and a strawman. Nobody said the fault is with most WW consumers. Secondly, this is an IT/tech forum so few such complaints would come across, and of course it may very well be that WW being more expensive offers service and products of generally a better perceived quality than their competitors. However to suggest that's it's OK if you're just a little better than the next guy is OK and one should not point out their BS is silly. Also one should compare to stores abroad as well.

Yep. I haven't even heard of "BDS" before I read about them on MyBB. Frankly if people want to protest, let them. These days people protest everything in SA. It however seems to be an issue not involving most South Africans and most of us don't really care about that part of the world. I empathize with the plight of those who suffer irrespective of where they are in the world, but let's not make distant local issues, South African issues. We have more pressing problems to deal with.

What p-sses me off is the whole Williams hype. I went into WW with all the Williams BS slogans and when asking for help and assistance, a suit rolled his eyes at me. And not the first time. Funny how it is that top university professors don't roll their eyes at me, yet a suit would do that. A suit who's only job is to make sure I spend money in his store. Come on. And that's supposed to be the most respected brand in SA. Our standards are really LOW.

For all american ladies and gents, remember this. The Daily show could not find one USA based comedian, to do this. They chose to import a foreigner, a Trevor Noah. Think about it. A USA show in a country of over 320 million has to import a foreigner because it helps their marketing.

the money - yes, it's coming from shoppers who are prepared to pay more, and your card is linked to a charity of your choice, so there is no big loss there.
why do we need pharrell ?
you refer to him as a singer ("WW could not find one black SA based performer"), which indicates you know very little of him.
he's more than just a singer, significantly more - in fact he does not do that much singing.
he has partnered with woolworths as fashion director for a range of clothing which is where he will showcase young local talent - keep in mind he has a massively successful clothing range, going so far as to design a jewelry range for loius vuitton.

so, yes, we are importing a global superstar, woolworths wants someone with talent, experience and reputation to drive this clothing range.
and, he is the king of cool - this helps kids take an interest in something they may not be interested in, or find "un-cool".
clearly he has a great interest in the welfare and development of kids:
Williams is building a $35 million afterschool center in his hometown Virginia Beach.[85] His charity "From One Hand To AnOTHER'" is a foundation developed for youth between the ages of 7 and 20 in at-risk communities throughout the country.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pharrell_Williams#Business_ventures

and then there is his charity organisation:
From One Hand To AnOTHER (FOHTA) is a 501 C3 Not for Profit Foundation established by Pharrell Williams to provide educational S.T.E.A.M.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, and Motivation) related tools needed for the future success of children.

It's a very poor analogy.

SA is a developing nation. USA is not.
US Dollar is strong. Rand is weak.
WW prides itself in local development e.g. MySchool but is happy to fsck local people over for a hipster rapper from the US.

Of course it helps WW marketing, but it would help them more to build up local talent. And it shows they don't give a sh-t about people who actually buy in their stores. Supporting local talent would make more wealth in SA, wealth which would be spent in their stores.
