Becoming Healthy Again

I'm on keto and if I don't limit my calorie intake I don't see any results. YMMV

I also understood from the LCHF diet - and please correct me if I am wrong - that even if you do eat at a surplus, you will maintain your body weight. You will only pick up weight again if you are at an extreme surplus.

Everyone is different, but yes, this appears to be the case. Unlike with carbs, fats can freely pass out of your body and spend time in your blood stream without your body having a panicked reaction to them. Carbs must be pushed into your muscles and organs immediately, which is why any surplus results in weight gain for most people.

Also an extreme surplus in LCHF is very rare, because the types of foods are so filling.

your diets are stupid. practice some self control around food and there are no need for diets.

Sigh, please learn the definition of the word diet before you use it incorrectly; at least where LCHF is concerned. A diet is merely the food that you eat. You are on a diet. Everyone on the planet is on some form of diet.

As in, "The Japanese diet consists of a lot of fish".
"My diet consists of a lot of fats and oils".

Much along the lines of "depression is just in your head. Cheer up"

Falcon you sound like somebody who hasn't struggled with weight loss before. Furthermore you sound like somebody who has no idea what they're talking about. Just go.

Started Banting again yesterday. Saw some pictures of myself from this weekend and was disappointed at how much I'd let myself go over the last few months. Gave me the motivation to start up again. Hopefully it sticks this time.

Currently at 95kg. Goal weight for my height is 75kg. Hoping to achieve that in 3 months.

20kg in 3 months, thats not going to be what i'd consider safe or effective in the long term.

Healthy weight loss is generally considered to be 1-2 pounds a week.

So at 2 pounds a week (lets round up and say 1kg). Thats 4kg a month, 12kg in 3 months. You're wanting to hit 20kg - thats a tad unhealthy and it also means you're just going to be putting it straight back on again.

Doesn't scale directly though...i.e. if you're overweight by quite a bit then you can make some quick gains quite safely. Hell there are cases where hectically overweight people pretty much just stopped eating for a month (vitamins & basic nutrients aside)...worked out fine.

That does seem to be the case with me. In my first Banting attempt, I lost almost 10 kg in the first month. However when I fell off the wagon, I put the weight back on (and more) in no time. I have to be more disciplined this time around.

Sounds like you went calorie deficit Banting as apposed to normal Banting. Every Calorie deficit eating lifestyle will result in putting the weight back on when you fall off the wagon.

Had to go low cal coz I lead a fairly sedentary lifestyle. Once I lose a bit of weight and get my fitness levels up a bit, I will try to get in some more exercise. Too self conscious and lacking in motivation to do the whole gym thing at the moment. I am trying to do yoga once a week though.

Mine is also pretty sedentary. But you dont have to go low cal to make Banting work. Just aim to eat what your body needs in calories in the beginning, and allow your body to dictate your appetite. It takes about 2 weeks I found, of eating your calorie requirements, before your body adjusts enough to stave off the natural hunger. And then it dictates your appetite just fine, making it near impossible to fall off the wagon.

Don't force the calorie deficit. If you feel peckish, eat until satisfied. Just keep doing that and let your body adjust at its own pace. If you ever feel that you are eating at a calorie deficit and are not happy with how low that deficit is, then down some olive oil. If you don't like the taste (Like me) mix it with a squirt of lemon juice and/or Mayo. Like a home made salad dressing. Makes it far more palatable, at least for me.

If you can manage that for a few weeks, your body will easily be able to dictate its own food requirements, without you feeling like you are eating at a deficit at all.

Thanks for the tips.. I have taken to keeping a bag of biltong at my side at all times.. so when i feel hungry i have a few slices of biltong.. seems to be working fine.. as I am not really having such hectic hunger pangs at the moment.
