Bed Recommendations

One thing I’ve been reading is that if you’re having back issues like I’m having, you likely need a firmer bed. That said, I’m about 65kg so I can probably get away with a medium-firm one.

But yea I’ll definitely take some for a test ride, just don’t want to find a “comfy” one that I’m replacing in 4 years like my current one.

I’ll try Cloud Nine, Sealy and Restonic I guess, those all seem to be good brands.
Yes one of the reasons I like cloud nine is that it’s got a plush feel, but after you sink in a few centimetres you definitely feel that there’s a very firm layer underneath that won’t sag after a couple of years. Of course I don’t know much about foam but that’s the impression I get. There’s also the warranty.

Sealy was my second choice.

Make some changes if your health is at stake. Back pain gets a lot more expensive later on.

What I mean is don't go cheap if you can then just as well keep what you have now.

I’m not going cheap. If I was going cheap I’d grab a R3k POS from the nearest store.

My health isn’t at stake, I don’t have chronic back issues, but I do have an acute issue right now and the bed is only exacerbating the issue, hence the upgrade.

Seriously, Go try The Bed Shop. Locally made beds that are really really good. We absolutely love our bed from there. There are lots of combinations of coil foam tops materials you can choose. Its proper world class beds.

I used to only buy Serta or Sealy, the bed shop is way way better and cheeper.

And if you want to keep it from turning chronic, get a good bed :p

With that said, I don't believe in choosing a specific brand based on how it works for others.

I went with this based on the type of bed my doctor recommended for me and after testing it. It's been 8 years and I've never slept better...

I'm in the market for a new bed.

My current one is a piece of crap and I'm struggling with back pain - not all from the bed, but a lot of it I'm sure.

Need recommendations on brands and/or models as well as any other general tips.

Looking at a queen and budget is no more than R8k, though less is better.
You won't go wrong with a Sloom.

Yep, can second the bed shop...

That's nonsense, it depends on how your back is being shaped that's causing the pain. I wasted money on a firm bed only for it to get worse.

Before buying a bed, you should rather first go see an orthopedist. Get some scans done and have them advise you based on how your spine is shaped and what bed will help you correct it.

A bed is crucial to good health and you don't want to guess or skimp on a good one. You also don't necessarily want to go on other recommendations, as they may not be the right match for you. Based on the doctors recommendation, you need to go test them in store...
Some bed stores have a “sleep lab” with a bed you lie on top of and it will measure where the pressure points of your favoured sleeping position are and they’ll give you a printout and recommendations based on that.

Firm seems more Palaeolithic, but so is side sleeping.

I had no issues with it so far , way better then spring type mattress. You also get a 30 night trial.
You might not, but that doesn't apply to everyone. Each person has a unique requirement...

Taking advice on what bed to purchase from your doctor would be the as valuable as taking advice from @backstreetboy on anything.
I mean what does a GP know about bed designs or even back problems? He will just tell you whatever some rep told him out the marketing brochure.

My advice(which is as valuable as every other clown on the internet) Don't sleep on an old rundown mattress. I would normally say don't get to soft a mattress, but you weighing 65, should not make a dent in anything. So just get any well known quality brand. If you have back problems, chances are more likely its got to do with what you do every day, lifting stuff, sitting wrong on the wrong chair at your desk etc.
I used to get muscle spasms in my back, normally when I wake up in the morning and thought its the mattress or how I sleep. Sometimes so bad I had to go for a massage to rub it out. Then I stopped playing golf and never had a problem since, I never had a pain while playing, only the next day or two

Might have to see a Biokeniticist.
Do they help?

I got similar issues with my back. I went to a chiro and the pain went away for a bit but it's back. He recommended I raise my screen above eye level and do stretches every hour.

Sitting at the computer since I was 6 years old, didn't help. Go play outside kids.
