I'm in the market for a new bed.

My current one is a piece of crap and I'm struggling with back pain - not all from the bed, but a lot of it I'm sure.

Need recommendations on brands and/or models as well as any other general tips.

Looking at a queen and budget is no more than R8k, though less is better.

Like a bed or the soft thing that goes on the frame / base?

You going to be top or bottom ?

@backstreetboy and @SauRoNZA recommend Cloud Nine. They don’t use springs only dense foam so your back doesn’t flex unnecessarily.

If you sleep on your side you need a softer model so try them out first at the store. If your budget is R8k, don’t be afraid to try out the R10k sets because they go on sale all the time.

As above Cloud Nine is the way to go and should be able to find something in that budget of 8-10k.

Less is likely either not going to exist or be super firm.

You have to try these things in a store. Take your pillow with and go have a proper lie down, not just an on and off bounce.

It will be with you the next 20+ years after all.

Cloud Nine Camden XT / Premium for around R9k (shop around and get some free pillows thrown in). Or the Loadestar for a bit cheaper but it's really firm.

One thing I’ve been reading is that if you’re having back issues like I’m having, you likely need a firmer bed. That said, I’m about 65kg so I can probably get away with a medium-firm one.

But yea I’ll definitely take some for a test ride, just don’t want to find a “comfy” one that I’m replacing in 4 years like my current one.

I’ll try Cloud Nine, Sealy and Restonic I guess, those all seem to be good brands.

Personal experience and recommendation

Go for mattress that is not equal but more to your current weight. e.g. I've gotten the 200kg where as I weight about 88kgs. Finally, firmer is better and currently I have a cloud nine Chiroflex/Hip Something. Then go irl and test them out.

edit - see:

If you can you should do at least back rotations*; even better if possible a light workout that supports the back. That is back muscles and related muscles while applying good form and proper warmup. In combination that is how I solved 90% of my back issues.

*These are like this (checkup before, and find out if you can actually do some of these)

Why do you limit you budget so much on something you going to spend the next 15-20 years and use half of your life.

If I could I’d happily spend R20k. Unfortunately I live on earth where choices are often limited by means.

Thanks man I’ll check it out. Went to a chiro, she had all the fantastic tests, checks and psychological probing regarding stresses in my life. Didn’t do anything for the back though. Time to find a physio maybe.

Make some changes if your health is at stake. Back pain gets a lot more expensive later on.

What I mean is don't go cheap if you can then just as well keep what you have now.

That's nonsense, it depends on how your back is being shaped that's causing the pain. I wasted money on a firm bed only for it to get worse.

Before buying a bed, you should rather first go see an orthopedist. Get some scans done and have them advise you based on how your spine is shaped and what bed will help you correct it.

A bed is crucial to good health and you don't want to guess or skimp on a good one. You also don't necessarily want to go on other recommendations, as they may not be the right match for you. Based on the doctors recommendation, you need to go test them in store...

That's a complex matter and I'm not always sure whether the chiro and/or physio are better, but at some point someone has to do the check. I mention this because not everyone can do everything and if you have existing or prone to issues, some exercises may actually be harmful. These exclude proper form, warmup and handling the weights (if any) correctly during, pickup, and put down. Most injuries are actually caused by people "just" picking up and putting them down without care. For myself I do deadlifts, rows and shrugs to promote my back with posture cultivation through farmer's walk and it's two variants. These can obviously **** you up if you don't do them with a good form; for example shrugs are not shoulder rolls which are bad for them, but just a single upwards motion without leaning but keeping posture.

So yeah, before it turns into a pump my iron session. I just wanted to add that it is something you can look into.

No, go to an actual doctor...
