BEE high-flyer's dream falls apart

Multimillionaire businessman Edward Rusike was living the BEE dream: winning multimillion-rand government tenders, partnering with communication heavyweights and even installing cable in President Thabo Mbeki's office.

But when the 43-year-old self-proclaimed South African was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion that he is, in fact, an illegal Zimbabwean immigrant, that dream began falling apart.

Now the high-flyer, whose information technology company has ironically also won multiple communication tenders from the correctional services department, is being detained in Pretoria Central prison and is facing jail time as well as deportation for fraud and violating the Immigration Act.

'cos BEE is all cash-to-friends program... it has nothing to do with being fair.

Show me one BEE beneficiary that is not a friend of a high ranking politician OR a current politician.

Quite easy, home affairs is as corrupt as any goverment department. That sorts out the ID document. Then BEE, is like a candy store; free for all if your skin is black and you have friends in those corrupt departments.
 
The Sunday Independent has learnt that Rusike was arrested after he submitted a sworn affidavit to the home affairs department in which he claimed he was born in South Africa but had lost his documentation.

Home affairs then conducted its own investigation, in which officials are understood to have recovered Rusike's Zimbabwean birth certificate and traced his parents.

And how many people who pull this scam get away with it and this is not including foreigners marrying South African with or without their knowledge.

If the incentive is there they will do it especially with the huge BEE carrot.
 
We were discussing something similar to this at work and it really is simple to get away with..

How many of you check with the universities of your employees degrees? Also when was the last time you checked a clients someones nationality? Society works on trust and honesty the majority of the time what is suprising however is that this guy got caught, with all that money you would think he could have 'oranised' his papers
 
If you have a white owned company you can get BEE rated legitimately. I have just had a certificate signed by the accounting officer and myself saying my turnover is less than R5m and know customers can claim 100% of the purchase for BEE. No sleight of hand nothing>
 
Just the government getting more egg on the face - nothing new, really. :)
 
HR departments would hopefully check up on employees degrees but what about contracted consultants? I come to your place and tell you I have a doctorate in information security from Stanford University, why would you not beleive me if I was recommended....

There should be an easier way to check up on people

He had an ID doc, now seems to be fake, so if you are a Black SA Citizen you qualify. He used fruadulent papers and was busted, good news all around.
