beginner fruit/veg garden

As much as I like the Checkers Little Garden (and lemme say I really really like it) ... I just wonder if it might have been better suited to a August / September launch. Kids (and adults) are gonna watch these things sprout, and then get excited and then in a month's time when it's ready for planting into the garden there's gonna be frost every morning and it's gonna kill everything :(
Don't recall ever seeing frost around these parts but we're thinking about transplanting the seedlings into larger planters first anyway.

Snails are out in force this year. Bastards targeting my beans in particular.

I started some peas and spinach in the winter, since they can take it. Busy sorting out the planting area where the dogs can't get right now, but the spinach was planted in pots and the peas are protected. Spinach is growing a bit slow for my taste but I guess it's part of the fun. Peas are rocketing and going everywhere.

I have a bunch of jiffy pellets I'll be trying out for the first time this year. Can't wait!

Nothing easier or more rewarding than

Purple Lettuce:

Coriander:

You'll have a delicious green salad every day from just a few of each plant. Add a simple dressing and parmesan shavings ...... yum, yum.

OK so I'm going full steam with this as well this year. Planting in pots and planters due to space, but I'm looking forward to the lot! I'm going for seedlings mostly, as I'm a bit over planting seeds, to be honest. I tried lettuce, spinach, peas, broccoli and cherry tomatoes, and of the lot only the peas, spinach and cherry tomatoes look like they'll make it. Spinach is growing a lot slower than I'd expected and the cherry tomatoes are only starting to show secondary leaves now, so I'd really only call the peas somewhat of a success. They seem to be bursting now, specially now that the cold front is over and it's heating up a bit. Getting 2~5cm a day from some of the new stems on the climbing rack. Peas and flowers popping out everywhere, so that's nice.

This weekend I'm planning on planting the cherry tomatoes, get them out of the house. I'll also plant some more seeds in the jiffy pods I have left, but it'll probably be something like more peas. I'm loving those.

Anyway, I'll invest in a "salad mix", consisting of some lettuce, coriander, rocket, purple lettuce and maybe one or two other things. Combined with the parsley I have, the cherry tomatoes coming in and the spinach in the garden I'll have one hell of a lekker salad mix. Also aiming for one or two sweet pepper plants, some carrots in the open spots I have and I'll be sticking potatoes in pots for the first time as well. I can also try squashes or pumpkin since I have holes in the pavement where they'll go and they'll do well if kept off moist soil all the time, and expand over the pavement.

PS: To those planting lettuce and other veggies growing close to the ground that are a bitch to clean/wash, plant them like this:

1. Make little mounds on the soil where you want to plant your seedlings.
2. Cover with a black plastic bag.
3. Cut little holes in the plastic where the plants should go.
4. Plant them through the holes in the plastic.

This not only helps to keep moisture in the soil like lettuce and some of the other plants need, but it also helps to keep snails as bay and keep soil off your veggies so they're easier to harvest/eat.

Nice!! I also got a head start this year, but the last frost on Sunday killed a few of my seedlings. I was an idiot to leave them outside when i knew it was gonna be cold that morning. But I'm still 2 months ahead of last year's progress so it's looking good. Best of luck to you!

Anyone managed to grow Hops from seed? This is the 2nd spring im trying but i just couldnt get the seeds to germinate last year. Its that dam cold break thing you have to do (in the fridge for a month or two in damp material) just didn't get it right).
Anyone in jozi got a plant i can get a cutting from. Want to grow a hedge along a wall with it.

Keep in mind hops is poisonous to dogs. Like, deadly.

Oh, that's interesting. Pity because hops plants look gorgeous.

Also @Toxxyc remember to plant your potatoes somewhere you can build the soil up around the stems as they grow. Hessian bags are work well.

It's also not too easy to grow hops, just to ease the transition to "no". They're in the same family as cannabis, IIRC, and that's also explains why you need to tend them very carefully to get a good yield. Untended they'll grow just fine, but their yield will be less than desired if you don't want the nutrients and soil and so on closely.

I took some cuttings from my hanepoot vine earlier this year. I have over 20 and giving some of them away to anyone interested.

I'm in Somerset West so you will need to collect and bring your own container to put them in. 20181027_114829.jpeg20181027_114829.jpeg

time for a full update...
Marigolds are all doing great, without me really making any effort. They just keep flowering.

a couple of Jalapenos are starting to put out the beginnings of flowers

I transplanted the first of the Jalapenos into it's final home... a PnP fabric bag (for air-pruning) and a plastic basin underneath it to serve as the self-watering container. PnP bag = R10 , plastic basin = R25 @ makro

I know its been a while since you posted this...

What diameter does the plastic tub have?

How do I get rid of aphids? The have taken over all my pot plants in my balcony.

Maybe 50cm, or close enough.
Basins didn't work out too good for me, so now I do most of my planting in the ground. To me they need a bit of micro-management. Plants in the ground don't dry out as easily, and don't burn up as easily with the heat. I noticed that the soil in the basins get very hot, even when they get like 4 hours of sunlight.

I heard that dish-washing liquid diluted with water and sprayed on them will kill them (...use a spray bottle) and leave the plants unharmed. I haven't tried it, but the science sounds sensible... they breathe through their "skin" (exoskeleton?) and the soap clogs it up so they die.

The problem I have is that there is not really ground(soil) space to plant. I can plant in pots or in bags, and have lots of space for that. Sun or shade and the bits in between.

I gots me some of this over the weekend..

Only had one spraying so far, so can't vouch for efficacy yet but it says 'kills aphids' on the box..

Active ingredient is canola oil & garlic, who would thunk it..

My curry leaf tree is flowering for the first time in the 3/4 years that I've had it. Tried to grow another one from a cutting but it did not take.

Will see how the curry berries turn out and try and plant a few seeds. Might have better luck with the seeds than the cuttings. 20181116_165713.jpeg
