OK so I'm going full steam with this as well this year. Planting in pots and planters due to space, but I'm looking forward to the lot! I'm going for seedlings mostly, as I'm a bit over planting seeds, to be honest. I tried lettuce, spinach, peas, broccoli and cherry tomatoes, and of the lot only the peas, spinach and cherry tomatoes look like they'll make it. Spinach is growing a lot slower than I'd expected and the cherry tomatoes are only starting to show secondary leaves now, so I'd really only call the peas somewhat of a success. They seem to be bursting now, specially now that the cold front is over and it's heating up a bit. Getting 2~5cm a day from some of the new stems on the climbing rack. Peas and flowers popping out everywhere, so that's nice.
This weekend I'm planning on planting the cherry tomatoes, get them out of the house. I'll also plant some more seeds in the jiffy pods I have left, but it'll probably be something like more peas. I'm loving those.
Anyway, I'll invest in a "salad mix", consisting of some lettuce, coriander, rocket, purple lettuce and maybe one or two other things. Combined with the parsley I have, the cherry tomatoes coming in and the spinach in the garden I'll have one hell of a lekker salad mix. Also aiming for one or two sweet pepper plants, some carrots in the open spots I have and I'll be sticking potatoes in pots for the first time as well. I can also try squashes or pumpkin since I have holes in the pavement where they'll go and they'll do well if kept off moist soil all the time, and expand over the pavement.
PS: To those planting lettuce and other veggies growing close to the ground that are a bitch to clean/wash, plant them like this:
1. Make little mounds on the soil where you want to plant your seedlings.
2. Cover with a black plastic bag.
3. Cut little holes in the plastic where the plants should go.
4. Plant them through the holes in the plastic.
This not only helps to keep moisture in the soil like lettuce and some of the other plants need, but it also helps to keep snails as bay and keep soil off your veggies so they're easier to harvest/eat.
