Best Android applications

I think there are better ones.
Google Sky Map is cool
Of course, there's the facebook app
Layar
ConnectBot for SSH
Fring
Locale (awesome!)
My Tracks
Tripit
Barcode Scanner

These are some that I use regularly...

+1
Fring is definitely a winner on Android.

By far the most important app is WaveSecure.

Here are some others which I can recommend:
NewsRob, Astro file manager, Places directory, TwonkyServer, NetCounter, APNDroid, Remote RDP, FotMob

I'm sorry, but that was a terrible list. Check the apps as mentioned above.

Have all of those except for paperdroid - will download. I don't think it's a terrible list, they are good apps and good for anyone who didn't already know of them. There certainly are plenty more though.

I would add/recommend the following...

RealCalc (Need a real calculator, not a Toy)
News24 (Std browser crash when opening News24)
Sudoku (For when you are in a Telkom service queue)
GhostCommander (Need to browse some files?)
ES File Explorer (Want to copy some files over wifi?)
2G-3G Widget (Quickly enabled/disable 3G if you wnat to save battery life. Could get an extra 12 to 24 hours out of a battery depending on use)
NetSentry (Monitor your bandwidth usage to not get a too-big a surprise at the end of the month
WiSync (To better manage bandwidth in SAs expensive mobile bandwidth environment)

Side note... I WISH ANDROID 2.1 WAS HERE ALREADY (for my Hero)!

I guess it's tough to compile a starting list.

Here's some must haves not mentioned in the article or above (imho)
Easytether (tether to your pc/laptop quickly and easily)
Handcent SMS (enhanced SMS utility)
SMS Backup (backup your smses to Gmail)
Lookout (virus, contacts and picture backup, find your phone and remotely set off an alarm)
Shazam (what is that song you are listening to?)
Sim Checker (Lite) (Sends a mail or sms when you sms is swopped)
Speed Test (speedtest.net app)
TuneWiki (listen to music, finds lyrics album art etc and plays shoutcast radio)
Trapster (notifies you when you are approaching a speed trap)
Wapedia (Wikipedia app)
Bump and/or Hoccer (over the air file transfer)
3G Watchdog (Bandwidth monitor)
Flyscreen(the jury's still out)

3banana
Android system info
androidvnc
Backgrounds
Bubble
Document to go
fx camera
gps status
3gtest
hoccer
imeem mobile
listen
lookator AR
MotherTED
MyCon
Pdanet
compass
Spare Parts
speedtest.net
Transdroid
Tunewiki
Twidroid
Ustream Broadcastor
Ustream viewer
voice search

Absolutely prefer "Automatic task killer" over all the other task killing apps. Simply because it seems like the only one (I've found) smart enough to do the work for you. Open it up, select which apps it has the right to close and when your phone enters standby it does its business.

On this topic though, anyone know of any good gps packages other than Ndrive? Preferably one that would work on 1.5 AND 2.1? (Considering the Hero 2.1 upgrade that is coming)
Ndrive is slow to start navigation, is missing MANY local streets and deactivates whenever I go offroute..........so a better option would be nice. (Tried copilot but apparently they're not out in SA yet :/)

I saw a Southern African Map pack on Copilot's website, but it costs something like 80 Euros.

Nah mailed copilot when I saw that myself and promptly recieved a reply saying they're "Not ready for release". Checking now it looks like they removed any mention of SA maps: http://www.alk.com/copilot/v8-maps.asp

Google maps doesn't support navigation anywhere other than USA though right? Also a bit iffy with it not storing the maps and costing a fortune to use each time.....

Hi all. I recently got the HTC Tatoo - cool phone, but don't have any apps (other than what is on the phone). There are a lot of apps mentioned in this thread, but where to get them? Are thye free, or do we need to buy them? Any links would be appreciated.

Use the android market app on your phone. Sometimes the program can be downloaded from the publishes website, but most times they'll just link you to an address within the market. At the moment we only have access to free apps, so all it will cost is the data to download them. All of the programs mentioned in this thread should be in the market.
