Best car for a Student

Hi all.

I need some much needed advice from the gurus.

My daughter is starting her studies in Cape Town next month and I need to buy her a reliable and cost efficient car.

My budget is between R80 000 and R100 000.

I was looking at the following vehicles.

1. Vw Polo Vivo
2. Toyota Yaris
3. Nissan Micra
4. Hyundai i10
5. Ford Figo
6. Suzuki Alto or Swift

All advice would be greatly appreciated.

5. Easy to maintain if it breaks. 1. Is also a good car but high risk vehicle.
 
Go and test drive each one... Then decide what is important for yourself. With the Internet each one has his/her opinion and ignore the facts. So get your own facts.

But my opinion is Polo vivo each day... Drive one then you'll be able to agree

How will you be servicing the vehicle privately or at dealership.i think you should budget for a maintenance plan ,that you can pay monthly.I know that liquid capital and motorite offer maintenance plans.

Get it serviced at a dealership.It will be less stressful on your daughter and more convenient.

The Ford figo is 1 of the cheapest cars to maintain but I am not really a fan.

I think you should have a look at a Ford fiesta or Opel corsa for that kind of money.The Hyundai,Kia and Chevs at that price aren't as safe as Fiesta and Corsa.That Hyundai i10 is terrible and please don't look at that deathtrap on wheels i.e Renault kwid and Datsun go.

Have a look at auto trader but ignore the ads from the unknown dealerships.There are too many Josh Autos,Tembi's rides and 1stclasscars etc.Buy from a proper dealership and the likes of G2 cars,automark,cmh etc.

I found a Ford fiesta 1.4 ambiente in your price range.It is at a Ford dealership.

Not number 5, they are not fuel efficient, slow and uncomfortable.

The Suzuki Alto was a decent little car but it is discontinued now and that might have an effect on resale and service costs.

I think your requirements should be

Safety\ncap
Reliablity
Cost of ownership.

Stretch you budget to just over 100k and Get a 2015 VW Up! vw quality and drive but less theft risk and 5 star ncap. It's fuel efficient and cheap to service as well. It will be a 3 door though.
 
2 or 5 (Etios though, not Yaris)

1: VW are becoming quite notorious for insane parts and service costs, also the Vivo is a decade old design with a decade old engine and safety standards
3 & 4: both pushing their sales prices into the territory of much better cars, rather buy the much better cars then
6: I'm a fan, but the local mechanics seem to think parts availability is a perpetual issue
 
6. Swift preferably 1.4. Not the Alto
No.5 is also great option.
Number 2 Yaris is a different segment compared to the rest you mentioned, Yaris competes with Mazda2, Fiesta, i20 etc. Etios seems to be a better competitor.

No power steering, no ac, high maintenance, noisy engine, zero safety, easy to steal, easy to hi jack, easy to break into. Perfect car for a female student in Cape Town.
