Best car for a Student

I was checking the Suzuki Celerio. Vert impressed with the little car. All the bells and whistles. Will go and test drive it. What do you okes think.

Are parts readily available and are you close to a Suzuki service centre?

I would rather go for a 'common' vehicle first up like a i10 or an Etios.

Niche vehicles can be sources later.
 
It is cheap to buy and cheap running costs. Good level of standard equipment. With the most spacious cabin interior and roomiest boot in this size of car, Celerio practicality ranks above all its key rivals. Comfortable and easy to drive.

However its lacking a little refinement and has cheap-feeling interior plastics.

Prices for the Up! are crazy at the moment. I was offered for my wife's up, R3 000 less than I paid for it (bought as a demo a year back) on trade in. At the end didn't trade it in. Reliable little car that's light on fuel and maintenance.

Yaris is a lot better than an Etios, that's a horrible little car. VW, parts might be a little expensive at the dealers, but it's easy to find parts if need be at cheaper prices. Service costs are actually very cheap. My wife's previous Polo cost R999 for a minor service, and (I think) about R1400 for a major. Same with my previous Jetta Tsi, cost fractionally more to service.

As others have mentioned, the Yaris is not in the same market segment as the other options though, the Etios is i.e. you can't compare a Yaris to a Vivo, Yaris is the normal modern Polo's competition, Etios is the ancient Vivo's competition.

True, but as much as I don't like the Vivo, I would drive that any day over an Etios. Had one as a rental for a few weeks, it really was horrible.

I'm of the opposite opinion, I don't like that the Vivo has an ancient engine, that many of them don't have ABS because it was optional until not that long ago and that they are so easy to steal.

The Etios, while not an awesome car, doesn't have any of those problems and it even costs less.
 
Ok. So here's my conclusion thus far. Its going to be between the Suzuki Celerio (parts can be a problem) and Kia Picanto 1200. But my heart still says Etios although it is a ugly little car but screams relaibility... Vw Polo higher insurance because of high risk of theft and hi jacking... Now I am even more confused...
 
I20 1.6GLS, 5 star euro NCAP safety rating and 91kw under the bonnet so she overtake these trucks in CPT!

Cheap to maintain, mine never gives any problems. I test drove most of the other options, before I bought mine.

1. Vw Polo Vivo. Utter nonsense it is a old polo with citi golf underneath. Does not even have electric windows as standard, and the standard 55kw engine is noisy and slow.
2. Toyota Yaris . Will last forever and cheap to maintain, but some cheaper models did not have AC or electric windows.
3. Nissan Micra . Not much to to say, I did not test drive it as it was to small.
4. Hyundai i10 . To small and the alarm/remote central locking was not standard on I10.
5. Ford Figo. Old fiesta with a even worse engine!
6. Suzuki Alto or Swift. Swift is great of you fit it in the budget, was going be my 2nd choice. Make sure you get her the 1.4, the 1.2 is weak.
