Best Coffee Subscriptions in SA?

Thanks @RedViking for reaching out! I'm glad our Mystery Box is a hit :)

Do they tell you who roasts the coffee though?

Hey @zs-kev thanks for the question! We are actually launching the ability to purchase your favourite selection(s) this weekend. So if you like #13, (as @RedViking does), you will be able to buy it and we'll ship it to you.

Are all your beans specialty grade beans or do you also mix in some C-Grade?

Do you freeze your beans? Or the suppliers before you pack it?

I kind of like the idea of not knowing too much about the beans and then be able to get more info.

I would like to do a test at some point and order beans, test it fresh and then freeze it for a month or two and test it again.

We get our supplies from trusted roasters who typically only supply specialty beans, using their own unique roasting profiles. This way, you are ensured of a repeatedly great outcome. We value feedback and have discussions with roasters if their qualities are not up to standard.

We order and ship weekly, so beans are hot (excuse the pun) out of the roaster. We try get the beans to you before the 7 day period where they have degassed enough to thoroughly enjoy.

There is an element of suspense which we enjoy. We're always happy to share as much info as possible.

@The Mystery Coffee Club Thanks for coming here to answer our questions, appreciate it.

Thats fantastic!

Thats one of the reasons I am looking int subscriptions. I like the idea of not knowing what I am going to get, makes it more interesting to me.

I have a question with regards to size. Do you ever think you will offer bigger options in the future, like 250g etc? as I stated earlier, it takes me quite a bit of coffee to kinda dial in, so 100g won't take me far, plus, if I do find an option I like, I might want to get like 750g or 1kg to keep me going a while.

Thanks!

With the Eureka Mignon, its a bit more difficult as its step less, so I am using the numbers and markers to help me with adjustments, but there is no setting I can just put it in to get close enough....I have to keep messing around with it until I am in that ballpark range.

I feel like it so much more complicated than that! lol! I have gone through hours and hours of YouTube videos, read through home-barista.com's guides, but still dont feel like I am fully understanding how my adjustments are effecting the final result.

The other minor issue I have, is that I am using our regular kitchen scale, which is only accurate to 1g. I do need to get a more accurate scale. Looking at the Falicita Arc.
I've also got a Mignon and it honestly does get easier/faster to dial in as you get to know you setup... so it really is just building up experience. A couple of things that I've learned. I try and keep it simple and consistent. 1:2 ratio - 18g into the basket and 36g into the cup shooting for extraction time between 25 and 30s. With the correct grind size setting my grind timer is generally between ~10s and ~11s to get the 18g into the portafilter.

Once you are in the ball park, it becomes easier to dial in from roast to roast. When I'm making changes on the same bean / similar roast I literally move the dial by the smallest amount possible. Going from a medium roast to a light roast I'll have to change the dial between a half number to a whole number on the grind size dial... doesn't need more than that. Also, when adjusting the grind finer, do so while the grind is running - that avoids the burs from seizing up and the motor stalling out because you've clamped down too firmly on some coffee already in the burrs and it helps purge some of the older coarser coffee that may screw with consistency.

I've also found that if I don't want to fiddle with the grind settings anymore adding or subtracting a couple of decimal points from the grind timer is also a great way to fine tune that final bit. e.g. shot is extracting good time wise (so I don't want to grind any coarser/finer), but I may want to dial out a bit of sourness I can dose slightly less by taking 0.3 seconds out of the grind time to try and improve extraction to see if that makes a difference.

I'm still learning as well, so these are just my experiences and definitely not meant as gospel. So take them with a grain of salt if you will.

Finally, I've got one of these scales . It's cheap, accurate and small enough that it fits in easily on drip tray with a cup on top.

Thanks for the input. I do currently have it set to dose 16g between 11-12s, so I feel like I am really close, just make small minor adjustments from where I am.

That scale looks a bit small as I want to put 2 normal sized cups on the scale.

We are looking at a Mystery Box with 4x 250g tubes, which may cater to your needs. I'll have this up over the weekend!

We can also accommodate larger single selections (1kg) if you are keen.

Whoops - yes definitely too small for two cups! I use a naked portafilter, so just need to fit one cup underneath...

@zs-kev I've added 500g and 1kg options for you :)

Have a look and let me know!

That’s fantastic! I assume you will add the selections as time goes on…I assume there are more than that right?

Awesome! Thanks! I was kinda hoping we could see the 250g option on the Mystery Box.

Gotta first get through some of my other beans and then gonna give you guys a go.

I like this much like I like Checkers Oddbins.

It removes any pre-conceived notions of taste and quality based on label.

Can you find out what it actually is if you want to?
Unfortunately not. But you can tell him what you like and then order just those beans. There is a small summary on each coffee with a short description what beans it is.

Yeah sorry asked the question before I read the rest.

Being able to order the same is fine and I understand why as it protects their business and keeps return customers.

Will I be wasting my time/money putting these beans in my bean-to-cup machine?
