Nope, you're correct. The free version is now known as Essential+ and, pretty much has always been for only eight cameras; they just upped data retention from seven- to thirty days and made the licence lifetime instead of having to renew annually.

Oh Milestone will talk to all of those, pretty much no problem but, per above, you're limited to eight on the free licence. And you want a halfway decent 'doze box to run it on; you can get away with all the way down to a first-gen CPU but you really want eight gig RAM in there and you REALLY want an SSD for the system/boot drive; the data just pretty much any big old multi-tera storage brick.

After reading through the their Q&A a bit (and seeing the pricing for ...that) I wouldn't get any closer to Anycam than I've already been just on their site.

Well, all the commercial software is going to ding/tease you at some level in their pursuit of enticing you to commit.
As already mentioned XProtect lets you run eight cameras for free; Luxriot Evo goes one better to nine while Axxon Next goes all the way up to four and the really very weird to look at/work with Xeoma lets you go hog-wild on number of cameras but then clamp you in a whole other way. As for GeoVision VMS I'm just not sure what they allow with non-THEIR brand hardware, but I think it may be sixteen.
Or, as you do, you could just walk away from the commercial lock-you-down-in-SOME-way stuff and go FOSS care of ZoneMinder. Which, being Open Source has its own ...quirks (we're thinking about The Gimp here).
That said, in the long run it may well be worth your while to trial anyone of the commercial stuff for one that best fits your needs and pony up the necessary for the cameras you do/will have. But VGL with the hunt (and do please update here when you land on something; I, for one, have a bit of a ...thing with tracking CCTV software :erm: )
Do you have a link? It seems all of them are 30 day trails now.
I have a Uniview NVR which is less than useless so need an alternative fast.
I need remote viewing via an app (like ubiquiti does.) uniview said they could, but they app does not work and their NVR is one of the biggest failures of software I have ever come across, nothing works.
So back to the drawing board now.

Whats wrong with the uniview software? I found ezview to work much better than the Hikvision and Dahua apps. Never had issues with their "cloud" stuff either, basically scan a QR code and you're done.

Simply does not work.
The NVR software does not work in the browser.
The app does not render the cameras decoding gets stuck on 95%
The app does not appear to allow you to view locally
NVR is unusable on the new software

I returned it. (all these Chinese brands are pretty sketchy)
Will stick to Unifi, just suck to pay double for the cameras, but I suppose that's why they have the skill and money to build their applications.
And the guys I bought it from (Miro) completely disappeared when I raised the problems. They also gave incorrect information prior to ordering. All in all terrible after sales (near none existent) from miro and terrible experience in terms of product quality from Uniview.
(but I suppose that can be due to me comparing a expensive Unifi system with a Chinese budget system, expecting them to be on par.)
