hello,

our 2 win xp pcs have become very slow. Disks are defragmented, leading me to suspect the fault lies with congested registry.

Are there any reliable registry and temp folder cleaners out there, or do i simply need to format and re-install windows xp?

I already know about crap cleaner, used it a while back and wasnt really impressed.

Our pcs are up to date with antivirus defimitions using legit kaspersky 2011

does it help to prolong a windows xp lifespan by using revo uninstaller to clean up registry afterwards, or is that fruitless?
Any advice would be welcomed

Registry cleaners work as well as power balance armbands.

Your Computers (Laptops or Desktops) may have insufficient RAM (memory). So I would check the amount of RAM you have available and post it here.

You can Right Click on My Computer and select Properties and give us the CPU and RAM information.

That said,
Registry cleaners don't work, so don't waste your money and time on it. I've actually seen with my own eyes how a n00b messed up a completely fine system with a dumb Registry Program and he had the audacity to blame me for the stuff up. That was first and only comeback I've had in almost 15 years, lol :p

Startup entries, in other words, programs that boot with Windows can slow down your system, since all these apps are loaded into memory by default.

Use Autoruns here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902

Download and launch it and view the Logon and Winlogon sections. Deselect apps that you are not using, for instance Adobe Reader Speed Launcher, Adobe ARM. These are suppose to increase loading times of Adobe Programs, but they cause a slow down in your system

Disable all startup entries you don't use and don't plan on using. Check the Drivers section and Delete the "file not found or driver not found" entries here. This is old hardware and software that installed a driver on the system which is currently not available or outdated. It's safe to remove those entries.

Once you are done with that, reboot, post the CPU and RAM info here and I will add a few steps more which you can do to make the computer more responsive.

Lol... don't listen to these old cynics. A decent FREE registry clean like ccleaner isn't going to break your system. Sure, they could all be better at culling registry bloat, but the art has advanced a bit nowadays.

CCleaner gives you selectable list of things it can check for, a tooltip to tell you what they are, and then cleans those registry entries. The basic default selection has never culled any of the 20+ systems I've used it on.

It also lets you cleanup startup programs and restore points, although both can be done via windows utilities.

I'm not referring to Ccleaner in my post about culling a system, but rather paid software.

That said. The OP can run Ccleaner 20K times and it won't make a difference if the system isn't properly configured: startup entries, page file, windows effects and the list goes on.

In my experience, registry cleaners do not work. You're probably better of formatting and reinstalling Windows on both machines. Then cut down on any unnecessary startup programs. Install a good lightweight antivirus, like MSE (I'm not sure how lightweight Kaspersky is on system resources).

If the machines are capable and you don't mind spending money (you pay for anti virus after all), consider switching to Windows 7, as it tends to not get slow over time, like Windows XP.

I know a case of someone using a reg cleaner and afterwards was unable to open any office documents.

Precisely. I don't trust these programs with my registry. It's a fragile part of the OS.

Agreed here.

You can download and use TuneUp Utilities for 15 days free.

www.tune-up.com

Been using it since... forever. :)

This is a fine example of what not to use.

Totally disagree with you. Have you actually used it before?

It runs superb with Windows 7 64-bit, TuneUp's disk defragmenter is better than the default Windows one, there are a ton of tweaks you can do with it, love the startup program disable function, security recommendations, like disabling sending unique player information with Media Player, disable administrative shares (that is on by default) and a lot more.

I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

even if you dont you the reg cleaner part of ccleaner you can use it to delete the unwanted files and it also has a better way to inspect your startup programs,,,easy to disable and then later delete them if needed.

Also look at blackviper.com and adjust your other windows programs that may start when there is no need.

thanks all for your valued contributions. Both pcs have sufficient ram, 1.5 gig and 2gig on the other pc. Have alreaddy disabled a lot of startup items that doesn't need to run.

Guess i will haveto take another look at crap cleaner. Not going to format my pc until hdd prices have dropped back to normal levels.
Cheers

Please try out Advanced System Care, you will be glad you did, I used to swear by Ccleaner but ASC is
better. We purchased the Pro version for our technical teams, the best investment we ever did
The free version is just as good, also download Smart defrag 2 and Turbo boost and run them at least once a week

See the difference once you run the applications and post your results

You don't need to buy new hard drives to format your pc. :wtf:
