Best Router for Traffic Spltting?

Greetings All.

I am looking at purchasing a wireless N router.

I currently have a billion 7300RA, non-wireless unit.

I am looking to do traffic splitting on the router aswell.

Please let me know if I can just add to my current config and or if I need to replace it completely and or which router is best for traffic splitting.:wtf:
 
You can get a TP-LINK WR1043ND 300Mbps Ultimate Wireless N Gigabit Router for R600 ex VAT from Uniterm Direct. It's NOT an ADSL router, so you'll have to chain it with your existing Billion ADSL modem.
You can install DD-WRT firmware on it, which should allow you to dial multiple PPPoE accounts and do traffic splitting with Gatecrasher's script.

I'm doing the traffic splitting with a MikroTik RB750 (R350 ex VAT from Scoop Distributions), but it doesn't have wireless or ADSL capabilities, which is why I have a separate ADSL modem (D-Link DSL-2500U) and WiFi AP (D-Link 2100AP).
 
dd-wrt is what you need then you can use gatecrasher's scripts
 
Slightly off-topic, but why do you need to do traffic splitting? It's so 2005.

Why don't you rather get yourself an uncapped account, and your cost per GB will come down drastically, way less than the per GB cost of most local-only accounts. Also, you won't need to stuff around with your router, custom firmware, and multiple ADSL accounts.

The cost of data has dropped significantly, enough to make me wonder why anyone would still want to do traffic splitting. Please enlighten me. Perhaps you have a specialised need for it?

imagine - i am on OW Gold Uncapped.

However Axxess Express+ 384 says they will give me 10Mbps from 8pm to 8am at no cost adjustment to their current price. From previous experience I know that 2GB would be enough for the non-after hour times for general browsing. it makes running a capped plus Axxess account worthwhile.
 
Greetings all.

I am a tech junkie, and I reckon if I can get away with R800 all inclusive ( DO 3 - 9GB ( R700 ) + AXXESS 5GB ( R95) ) why should I be dropping R1100 ( all inclusive including telephone line rental ) on uncapped?

I am using the wireless from my OLD NEOTEL contract - newflex data - no charge they cancelled cause they sucked so much... :-P

Anyhow, I want to get wireless N in my house since my new XBOX now supports it and I use on average about 20GB a month ( topups via afrihost and axxess depending ).

So, seeing as akamai has local servers and when I am hosting a game on xbox live most of my friends who are playing with me are locals, why should I pay paying international prices?

Questions/Comments?
 
RB750 Mikrotik router :) Will do everything you want and more.
 
Apologies, my "DO 3 - 9GB ( R700 " includes telephone line rental... aka: all inclusive my telkom bill....
 
Yup. The MikroTik routers are awesome. I've done the beginner training course of MikroTik, but you can learn basically all of that from going through the Wiki pages.
If you're earning a reasonable amount, then it would be worth it to do the course, instead of wasting hours and hours of struggling to setup the router yourself.
The MikroTik routers are really awesome to setup using WinBox, compared to how difficult it is to setup routers running DD-WRT firmware.
My RB750 is definitely doing its job: I'm running VLANs, PPPoE connections, PPTP VPNs and routing & shaping traffic for like 6 WAN interfaces :D

I can try to make a script this week to split traffic on a D-Link DSL-2500U (based on the work done in this thread: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...nd-international-traffic-now-on-Telkom-Router )

You can GET it from them with DD-WRT or, if your Linux-foo is stronger, Openwrt preinstalled (and yes, I am aware of x-wrt to (I believe) get around that, I just have no experience with it yet), thus saving the (remote) possibility that the 2 year warranty would be voided by your having installed 3rd party firmware. Yes you pay (a whole/measly) R50 for them to do it but what's R50 in 2 years?

And then: one CAN do multiple on DD-WRT eh? ..GREAT to know, for I have that exact need at a site (more below)

..and if splitting/multi PPPoE is a mission on the TP-LINK I'll just demote it to AP-only status and recommend one of these! (which would mean 3 devices at the 'internet-in' part but hey. :p

As you like: I have a site/client/buddy where the wife works from home and in the same house they have 3 young girls (13/13/11) who, for now, have had to be told in NO uncertain terms to staythehellaway from Youtube, torrents, etcetera; a capped (and hopefully better for data rate) account for mom with a *separate* uncapped for the girls/family would suit them down to the ground as mom could get work done and the family could noodle around to their hearts' content without interfering with mom's ability to work.

...so, Gatecrasher script eh? ;)

I just did my research on the product you suggested and to be honest I am impressed ( TP-LINK WR1043ND 300Mbps Ultimate Wireless N Gigabit Router for R600 ex VAT from Uniterm Direct) she had me drooling when I got to the specs: the 400mhz processor, 5 x 1GB ports and the USB features, not to mention the debated 32 0r 40mb of ram.... , wireless N, seriously, how do you restrain yourself? :-)

Anycase, I think we have a winner.
 
I would also recomend a mikrotik router, anyone will probably do, depending on your needs. But the RB750 is certainly the best bang for your buck
 
The MikroTik RB750 is packed with features for its price. I also have one and its definitely doing its job: dialing VPN's, PPPoE connections, splitting traffic and also shaping traffic.

Toxichc: if you intend on getting that TP-Link router and installing DD-WRT firmware on it, I would suggest that you ask the supplier to install DD-WRT for you (which will cost like R50 extra), but then you get to keep the warranty.
 
So before I jump off the proverbial bandwagon and grab myself a TP-Link, which has Gigabit Ethernet vs. 100mb like the RB750 and naturally the wireless N , what am I actually sacrificing ( besides the R250 price difference) ?

Or you can get a Mikrotik RB750G (5 x GbE ports) and a TP-LINK WA901ND, the pure AP version of the router you have in mind.

Since the WA901ND is only an AP it supports PoE (ships with injector in the box) and I can put in my roof to get great coverage through the whole house (as opposed to battling through the brick walls of my study where the ADSL is). I get ~9.7MB/s on Win-to-Win transfers to/from my laptop with Intel 5100 N card, pretty close to 100Mb/s Ethernet (12.X MB/s).

PS: the modem I have attached to the RB750G is also a TP-LINK TD-8840 which uses the Broadcom ADSL chipset, really good at handling crappy ADSL lines, like mine (same one as in the Netgear 834 that many swear by).

This project is starting to make me feel like one of those ham radio guys from days of old.

As much as I would like 3 devices doing the job, 1 is preferred whilst 2 is acceptable.

My current setup: Billion 7300RA - ADSL, Axesstell MV440 ( my neoflex contract that NEOTEL cancelled due to congestion - they have not fetched my router yet - 9 month later... :-)))) and a CNET 10/100MB switch
So if I go TP-Link I am reducing my entire setup down to 2 devices: TPLINK and Billion 7300RA and I gain GB/ethernet and 300mb/wireless as well a traffic splitting and probably a minimum wage in electricity each year.

So naturally for R100/200/300 more it may be worth my while getting all in one, provided that I can do the spltting I require.

Any suggestions Gents/Ladies/Lads/Okes/Guys?
