Hi i'm new to the whole 3G world and i would just like to know what is the best setup to run on my modem. I have read threw a few post and forums and some contradict each others.

At the moment i'm running the newest VMC Lite (3.2.1.156) but my connection sometimes compleatly cuts off and i can't reconnect. I have heard some rumers that the Lite program is buggy and decreases ur modems preformance.

Is this true? and if so what program should i use on my modem?

PS. What is the newest firmware for the E220?

Try setting your connection to use 3G Only. May help with the cut-offs.

Dont trust rumors... they are just rumors ;) VMCLite version 3 works excellent! The version that did 'apparently' have performance issues was version 2.2.2.1.

The newest firmware for the E220 is the version that you have on it now.

BTW V3G, i've seen a few E220 with a higher firmware version, which display 'Connected at 7.2Mbps'.

I also heard that and found a forum of one guy that did manage to get a 7.2Mbps connection.
He claimed that all he did was download the newest sofware from the HUAWEI website and install it.

Maby there is someone that would like to try it?
I personaly don't have the balls to start messing around with my modem, sice it took a big bite out of my wallet:D

Unless he's been put on the 7.2 profile by Vodacom, there is zero change he got 7.2 by just loading the latest software.

Rather I suspect, he got duped by the Windows string that pops up when you connect, which is not related to the actual radio connection.

That's what i have seen in the past 3 weeks a few times, and on one occasion i checked the firmware version and it was a different one.

Lol, poor guy.

Another question. When i'm online my modem lies on my window shelf. Is it bad for the modem to lay in the sun?

Its plastic, so logically IMO it would melt to some degree of heat.

The plastic won't suffer, I'm sure.

But heat is the enemy of all electronics. That's why you have to cool your PC down with fans to ensure it's stable. The more you cool it down, the better and faster it'll perform. You'll probably be able to overclock by a massive amount if you mount your PC inside a freezer!

In the same way, it's always better to keep your modem as cool as possible. But having said that, if it's working fine with no signs of instability, etc. it's probably OK.

We have seen cases where PCMCIA modems blow because the slot on the laptop is next to the exhaust fan and the hot air is blown directly onto the card.

In one case, the MD of a laptop company (recently quoted on this forum) went to the press with the claim that Vodacom does not have a 3G network at all, as for weeks, he's not been able to pick up any 3G anywhere in Pta and Jhb! All the advertising, etc. was all just smoke and mirrors.

It never dawned that maybe the card was faulty, which it turned out to be due to the exhaust fan problem.

Someone on this forum took a drill to his E220 and drilled the covers full of holes to get better ventilation and, as far as I can recall, reported better performance.

Me and a friend actually want to try this! We just never get around to it...

I'd just do the traditional thing and take the cover off. But before bothering, I'd keep checking how warm it actually gets. My slipstream gets slightly warm after a few hours, but not anything that warrants fiddling with it.

If I recall correctly, the original poster said the cover needs to be there to hold the sim in place. Thus his desire to emulate a B-movie henchman. :)

Actually, now that I mention it, Jean Claude van Damme once made a (proper B-class) movie at my house where they drilled a guy full of holes......garage is still full of blood stains.

You can't just throw a comment like that in and expect to get away with it. Some explanation is required!

I know you're down in the Cape, but that sounds violent even for the Cape Flats...
