Best streaming box

4k stick since it supports the new av1 codec. The Apple TV doesn't support Kodi so not sure why you'd want to downgrade.
I dont use kodi too often.....ok so the 4k stick is the best one?
maybe i'll get it for myself and my so can use my box....

is Nvidia shield worth it?
I already have a nuc set up for gaming / emulation

So my understanding is that it cannot do YouTube HDR.

This may or may not be an issue for you, but I'd be very hesitant to spend R5k+ on a Shield that can't do YouTube to it's full potential . It can't do AV1 and doesn't have Google TV to my knowledge, so I do guess there'll be something released with does full support.

Google TV? Meh. Who cares.

As for AV1. As with H264 which was still supported as H265 took off (and still is), all formats will be supported for the foreseeable future. Many devices still don't support H265 but resort to H264. My guess is that AV1 will only be required for 8K content in the future. And 8K content and TV's is not widespread at all yet. Several years away...

Look - you can tell yourself whatever you need to make you feel better, but R5,000+ is a lot of money for a system on an old UI ; that can't do YouTube HDR and can't support future codecs. Already, tons of content is available in AV1 on both Netflix and YouTube.

Whether you choose to overlook the issues and justify your purchase is your own thing, but I won't be buying something as limited for so much money .

Ok thanks, should Nvidia is R4000 on Amazon but I think I'll go for the new me stick

Google TV is more like a launcher / skin of Android TV. Only the new Chromecast and some newer TVs have it.
AV1 - all AV1 videos on YouTube are also available in other codecs i.e. you are not missing out on anything.

Guys, you can tell yourself whatever you want in order to sleep better at night. You can glance over & defend every short coming - it's still a short coming. I'm not dissing the Shield ; I'm giving advantages & disadvantages

Facts are facts - the Nvidia isn't for everyone and it is outdated in some aspects. Whether or not you care about the limitations is up to you though.

He's asking about the best streaming box and you're all recommending without giving him the flaws.

What if he's on a metered connection?
What if he's on a 15Mbs line?
What if he watches YouTube?
What if he wants the latest GUI?
What if he's on a budget?

A Mi Stick 4K is R1,200 and could do everything he needs at a fraction of the price .

How does it handle YouTube HDR content? Do the other codecs enable HDR?

A MI Stick 4K does not have Google TV. It has just Android TV.

I'm aware.

You guys haven't answered how the best and most expensive media box handles YouTube HDR?

You said "what if he wants the latest GUI", and then gave that as a disadvantage of the Shield, and the Mi Stick as the solution. I am just pointing out that the Mi Stick does not have "the latest GUI".

That is Android TV 11.
Android TV 11 can look vanilla.

You get with and without the Google TV like GUI. Android TV 11 doesn't automatically give the slick interface

I gave examples of items that someone may want. The Mi Stick ticks far more boxes at a fraction of the price.

If someone asks for the best, you should at least check what they need & have before saying the best box can't cover 80% of what he needs

I found my shield was starting to get laggy.

Anyway now I have a sky Q box. Does everything I need it to do and it's slick and fast. Very impressive actually, my last exposure to satellite boxes being dstv's ****.

Doesn't the new Mi Stick 4K heat up like the original Mi TV stick? My only concern.
