Beware data charges on MTN Anytime

WTF! This is news to me. I've been using my package assuming the R100 package can be used for anything.

I agree this should be breach of contracts.... But I think they might get away with they are allowed to make changes to prices when they please.. I think there is somehting of that sort in the contract...

This is so FSKING PATHETIC FROM THEM! This should definately be breach of contract as I was told multiple times that I could use it however I saw fit

MTN keep the change, Telkom FTW

I moved to Cape Town in April and got a MTN 500mb 3g account to carry on gaming a bit. I over used my bundle and decided to up it to a 1gb bundle. In the first month it was all good but then I noticed the second month my bill jumped to R1000 from R600 and the following month to R2300.

I noticed that they rolled over all usage from previous months and billed me for it. Despite numerous calls to mtn, going to 3 MTN centres, I was just given a number. My third account came at R3000.

Despite me logging my usage on a daily basis they claimed that I was actually using this amount that they rolled over. I.E. they never zero'd the account (15th of every month)

So, my freinds at MTN eventually credited me to the tune of about R400 for my trouble. As it stands I recon they still owe me about R4000.

I have since terminated my bundle and will be moving to one of our other providers.

I don't think that MTN willfully cheated me out of this money, but I do believe that their ineptness in assessing genuine usage from their own "false" carried over megs will cheat you out of your hard earned money too.

So to all at MTN, go on enjoy staff tea on me at your head office this month.
Perhaps when i drop by one of the cervice centres to terminate my account soon, I could get a cuppuccino.

yup i was told the same, on anytime 350

OH MY GOSH!!!!
This whole MTN Anytime scam is the biggest load of bull**** I have EVER come accross in my life. I really can't wait for the end of the year when my contract expires, Hope I never have to have ANYTHING to do with this lying, scum sucking network again.

Customers should have been advised accordingly by the relevant stores when subscribing to these packages,

I was not informed of this.

mtn you dumb fuks.

Like i said in an earlier post they don't get care about contracts just that you pay them, they are bigger and wont be held responsible.

They still owe me R400 never gonna get it.

they should be made to close shop untill its all resolved.

I've lodged a complaint about this and according to MTN, they'll investigate and get back to me in about 36 working days since it seems to be a billing fsckup. Go figure.

Just miss one month paying them and they,ll have you in court stripping you.

But the other way around cant be done.

WTF?1? I've received TOTALLY mixed messages about this. Took my Anytime 100 contract out through MTN Direct earlier this year... absolutely no mention of this 20% restriction nonsense. When I heard about it two months ago, I called MTN... spoke to a bunch of different people... who in the end actually denied this was the case. They referred me to the T&C on their web site... I couldn't find anything relating to the 20% restriction... just the clause on not primarily using the account for data. In legal terms, this should mean that 51% voice, 49% data is fine.

Legally, I don't think they can change the terms unilaterally. Perhaps they could then state that the airtime can only be used for international calls, for example.

The profit margins on data at R2 per meg are immense!!! On certain bundles, you get a meg for 20c. Why would they want to p*** off customers if they are making a sizable profit as it is? MTN logic!!!

Must say I'm glad of this discussion - will be very wary when I sign up next month

My assumption about how this package was priced in terms of sms and data is that the rates for those would be slightly worse than buying an equivalent valure pure data or sms bundle. That way they wouldn’t care what you used it for.

But I certainly don’t remember being told about this when I was changed to this package about a year ago.

Be fair, there are acceptable use issues here. If we all push each offering to the limit or use it outside the (possibly unstated) intent, we'll end up with too many rules to remember and too few competitive offerings. I do not think this is being skelm.

Get real: Exceeding 20% data usage is hardly "acceptable usage". What does 'primarily for data' mean - one month, 3 months?

The whole debacle is SLOPPY and not CUSTOMER FRIENDLY and I pity the customer who had to waste time fixing their stuff-up

MTN hit back, saying that the business rule of allowing a maximum of 20% of the inclusive airtime value for data was officially communicated to all MTN outlets. “Customers should have been advised accordingly by the relevant stores when subscribing to these packages,” said MTN.

“The website and the brochure clearly state that the Anytime packages ‘are not to be used primarily for data’
BULLFCKNSHYTE!!
"Not to be used primarily for data" means you can use 49.999999% for data...
If the "business rule" is not in the contract it doesn't exist.

MTN... Yes their communication sucks.

Besides all this, why would anyone want to use their inclusive cash on data? They charge R2/meg:eek:

Using R200 out of a R350 package for data is retarded. That'll get you far less than you could buy if you got a bundle...

Get a cheaper contract and add a data bundle!!!!!!

Thats not the point at all... You must be a MTN rep....lol

Just looked at the pricing now. I don't understand why MTN complain when you use this package as a data package. Anytime350 is R350 for 175MB. The closest data package is R389 for 2GB. Could someone try to explain to me how using the Anytime package as a data bundle is a negative for MTN?

the sim card for my MTN anytime 200 at R359pm sits in the car ... and to my shock the bill for the month is R644!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with not a single call being made or sms sent .... they charged me the full rental for the contract plus the full rental for the previous contract it was on ... this is fraud... it should be charged pro-rata ...

and on the data thing, nothing was explained to me that my R200 could not be used exclusively for data if i chose ...

Anyone knows if there are limitations, like this one from MTN, to data usage on prepaid(controlchat and topup) contracts from Vodacom and Cellc?
