Beware data charges on MTN Anytime

MTN you really do SUX and are liars!!! The other thing they don’t tell you is when you upgrade they cancel all your subscriptions like sms and data add ons. Then at the end of the month you get a huge bill!!

WTF! This is news to me. I've been using my package assuming the R100 package can be used for anything.

same here, I was not informed when taking out the contract of any such limitations

I cant believe they intentionally deceiving their customers after their "billing" saga which has not yet died down!

Maybe everything is intentional?

I concur. The Anytime contracts tagline is basically use the money as you see fit. However, what I was told by MTN Pavilion is that it doesn't even go towards SMS, only talk time. So MTN's official communication is as bad as Vodacom's. Why don't they just send big posters to all the stores so clients can read the truth, and not take a chance listening to their 'customer liaisons.'

I just got my wife a Blackberry.Guy told us BIS would only kick in at the end of the month. We got the phone on the 6th. So I thought, no worries, just use paid data till then. When I couldn't set up the email, I called MTN, and they said "But BIS is not initiated. Should I switch it on for you?" Umm, yeah! Done.

Total twaddle from the people who work in these shops.

Lets all port now. Come on guys, lets do this!

Damn that is under-handed!
Glad I'm on prepaid.
Really the least hassle and usually get more benefits than contract users :D

Blerrie skelms
Be fair, there are acceptable use issues here. If we all push each offering to the limit or use it outside the (possibly unstated) intent, we'll end up with too many rules to remember and too few competitive offerings. I do not think this is being skelm.

Thanks, I didn't know this. What a bunch a of w4nkers. I really should think about porting my number.

“The website and the brochure clearly state that the Anytime packages ‘are not to be used primarily for data’ and that Data and SMS bundles can be loaded onto price plans. Any reasonable consumer should then assume that there should be some restriction on data usage.”

What a load of bollocks. 20% is not a reasonable assumption. I took out a Anytime 350, expecting to use about R150 on calls, and R200 on data, as the package comes with a 100MB bundle attached already. When I asked the sales rep about data usage, he did point out the bit about it not being for primary usage, but he said that there was no indication of any actual limitation, and he said that probably 10-15% of it had to be spent on calls to be safe. Now I'm being told that I can use R70 on data and that is it, so effectively I have a 135MB data limit on this contract.

Lawyers out there, if this 20% is not stipulated in the terms and conditions I signed, can they hold me to it? Because this is not in the terms I signed, and goes against the reasons I signed the contract. If this was in the terms, I would not have signed, EVER.

Could this be termed as a breach of contract???

Regardless of this rule, I got charged for R2.35 (excl VAT) for ONE PSD call totaling about 2.4MB on Anytime 200. I've lodged a complaint about this and according to MTN, they'll investigate and get back to me in about 36 working days since it seems to be a billing fsckup. Go figure.

I too cannot recall the sales person mentioning a 20% limit on data; I'll have to check the contract I signed. Nor did the calldesk agent mention it when I queried the R2.35 data charge. According to the agent, your R200 airtime is used for any cellular use (SMS, Voice, Data) until it is depleted, whereafter you are charged specified out-of-bundle rates, mainly for voice. I asked TWICE for the agent to confirm this: Reference number 50427677, go listen to the recording whoever reads this from MTN.

ICASA better do something about these 2-year contract crap deals. I want a month to month contract with a detailed breakdown on exactly how much my R200 buys me, including the "free" [subsidised] phone.

I agree this should be breach of contracts.... But I think they might get away with they are allowed to make changes to prices when they please.. I think there is somehting of that sort in the contract...

Wow, that would have totally caught me out as I would probably have gone for Anytime with my next contract upgrade. As a "reasonable customer" I would have expected that their warning about not using it mainly for data was more to do with paying outrageous R2/MB OOB rates than any hard limit on MTNs side.

So basically MTNs slogan is : "Screw you ANYTIME , ALL THE TIME."

My first thought when i read about this package range was what any "reasonable consumer" would expect and any "reasonable service provider" would TELL YOU if different.
Use your money anytime for anything. I mean the OOBs rates are insane anyway, why would you want to restrict this?!! I am using alot more data on my phone lately, and surely everyone is, it's email, browsing , chatting etc etc...20% is unreasonable in this day and age.

Good thing i got "stuck" on a normal contract before they changed everything to this "screw you anytime" contracts.
