The French say don't open hotel doors for anyone except staff; sleep with your doors locked and be careful when using ATMs.
And, avoid minibus taxis.
In Johannesburg, avoid Hillbrow, Berea and Yeoville.
Cape Town's famous landmark is singled out for a mention, with a warning that there have been attacks on the mountain - some of them violent.
The same happens all over the world. Everywhere you go they make you aware of possible dangers. So what is the difference now?
I've traveled to Germany, Austria, Ukraine, Mozambique and Namibia, multiple times over the past 9 years. Not once did a consulate warn me about crime in any of those countries. For the Ukraine, my host on that side, warned me about muggers, which is understandable for a country that are recovering from socialism. Your assumption is therefor wrong, according to my experience.
Very true, i've heard of at least 4 rapes/attempted rapes and robberies in the last 2 years of people [foreigners] climbing Table Mountain......i don't see this becoming less [and i'm sure there were more, just not as serious]. A good warning if you ask me...

The you have been extremely lucky and very poorly advised. To say that there is no crime in Germany and that you do not have to take care in Moz is ridiculous and a veru irresponsible thing to advocate.
But still statistics shows that of all the countries in the world, even including third world countries, South Africa takes top honors. And that is based on false statistical Government information with crime and murder stats reported far lower than the real truth.
This I do not dispute. Tourists should be aware of the dangers of coming here. What really irks me is when people try to make out that this is the only country in the world that has crime. Like you wander around anywhere else in the world without a care in the world. This simply is not the case.
What do you know, I was in Czech republic recently for two weeks, walked around late at night, driven around on bicycle and was never approached by beggar, saw or experienced no crime, had nothing lost or stolen or anything of that nature. This is a country and a town specifically with a very high jobless rate. The difference is they can survive without jobs and crime, In South Africa that is but a communists dream.
What do I know? Well, I was born in England and have also travelled extensively throughout Europe. I will not bore you with the details and I do not want to get into a pointless argument here...
Bottom line is - there is crime in SA. It is bad. Tourists need to be warned about it.
HOWEVER
There is also crime throughout the rest of the world( except a very few areas that are still untouched. Large parts of Switzerland for example). Tourists need to be just as wary when going to these parts as they do when the come to SA.
Yeah OK TIT for TATt, So we have to treat all countries the same irrespective if you have a 2% chance of being mugged or robbed or a 98% chance. So we can say Iraq is no more dangerous than Switzerland, In both countries you MAY be a victim of a car bomb? Common be realistic!
