Bid to curb rock throwing

Ok, I don't drive up the N2 North very often, but from recollection most pedestrian bridges (if not all) are caged already, as are most pedestrian bridges on the other freeways from what I've seen.

Raising the fences may be an option, but they won't last long in my opinion. They will just get taken down for scrap metal.

Need the dual carriageway roads and highways fenced off too...

You foiled me.

The catch fence would have to be rather wide, it's easy to hurl half a brick 5m or more.

Fair enough, but the recent spate of attacks have involved rocks far larger than a half brick and I can't see a bored kid or druggie hurling a rock that far, much less accurately.

The ''consolation'' if you force them to throw a smaller rock or half brick is that they lose accuracy. Right now they can just hold a massive rock on the railing and just time the car passing underneath them.

I just don't see cages lasting long. SA has a rich history of building stuff and then never maintaining or patrolling it. If they are not stripped for scrap, they are accessible so you can simply cut holes in them and continue being a burden on society. A Catch fence has the added bonus of making them far less accessible and hopefully they fall and die if they do try and climb down and vandalise them.

So, people keep saying. Yet, the ones you mentioned and the one on the R300 are still there.

I'm specifically talking about KZN here, where bridge fences disappear relatively regularly, to the point that new bridges have cast in place concrete fencing these days.

Yip, every bridge on the M4 where the sides were not concrete had the metal removed, one day it's there and next it's gone leaving you with no barrier whatsoever.

Point taken. I haven't been down to that side in a while.

There isn't a bridge that runs through the Jo'burg CBD that hasn't had most or all of its railing removed. You live in Jo'burg. Next time you use the 'double decker' section of the M1 pay attention to the railing, or lack thereof. It is like that for kilos.

Put accessible fencing on bridges near informal settlements and they will eventually disappear.

rietrot expects police to sit on bridges all day and night and not have them attending to his request for assistance
Wtf no. These aren't criminal masterminds with an organised rock throwing attack. It's opertunistic scum a few patrolling police officers will quickly catch them.

Gone are the days when you could drive under a bridge and not have to worry about some savage/barbarian throwing a rock at your vehicle. How the **** are people raising their children?

Around GP, they are/have fencing around these squatter camps to keep people wandering onto the highways. But I imagine those only last a few months before someone vandalises to create a shortcut. I see along the N1 (Hammanskraal), people demolish parts of the wall they built there to stop people crossing the highway just to avoid using the pedestrian bridge. It keeps getting repaired and they keep breaking it. Idiots. And then they'll block the road when someone's kid gets runover.

WTF jouself! Precisely, they will just come there when the police officers have passed. Opportunistic scumbags that they are.

This is standard practice everywhere..

Even on the nice new freeway in Durbs where they have MANY pedestrian bridges, and large concrete bollards in the centre of the road to seperate the buslane from the normal lanes. The guys will run across the road and climb over the concrete bollard rather than use the pedestrian bridge that is no more than 50m from them... Drives me nuts.

Regarding the catch fence idea, I reckon the savages will just climb onto them and drop the rocks from there. How about a drop fence? If weight > x, activate hinge. For a very brief while the problem will continue. But once word spreads that their tjommies are swan diving off bridges with boulders in their hands, I think we could have a winner?

The ones that don't enclose the top but rather curve inwards would work
