Dude, it's a torrent so it's unlikely to be local.
But to answer your question, local connections are traditionally faster than international connections so yes, I can probably get that on local only if there were enough local seeds.
umm... the 6gb I downloaded this month (with NS) disagrees with you...Yes, but Usenet is not free (for decent content) as most require some form of account. And quite frankly torrents are easier to use and find.

You and wp are both right. I was thinking about the likes of Easynews and Giganews. Those types of sites traditionally require paid accounts in order to use them.
I wasn't aware that the SAIX and IS news servers were free.
However, I notice that http://www.newshost.za.net is no longer accepting registrations and http://www.diginova.co.za has been suspended.
Any other local tgz search servers around?

try getting a downstorm acount, they donload the torent and you download from them on http, its faster and local (i think) its about R50 a month for 3 gigs space, http://www.downstorm.co.za/
