Big changes coming to Gautrain

I live in Roodepoort CBD within a 600m radius from the Railway Station. Will my property be affected by this? Can somebody of Gautrain project Expansion post a map detailing affected aress and streets plz?

It'll probably be a complete independent rail expansion similar to the original project and they won't announce stations/exact routes until they have rights/property secured for the entire expansion.

Its all convenient and nice, but i doubt that gautrain is actually a profitable business.

Doesn't really matter, in and of itself. No large-scale transport mode is profitable, including roads. What matters more is their downstream benefit, re. access, congestion, environmental impact, public health etc.

Lol. Do you honestly think that the western cape could survive without the tax revenue collected from gauteng?

I dont think you understand how taxes work in SA.

Western Cape is one of the few TAX exporting provinces ie. we operate on our own tax whereas we get looted by other provinces in need year after year.

So yes the Western Cape doesn't need "gautrain" taxes. The western cape would do even better if we were allowed to keep all the collected taxes in our own province.

Bus+Train+Bus to get from South to Randburg - about 1h30 for a 40m journey - no thanks

Your argument was the that gautrain doesn't service Randburg. It causes delays, sure, but it does service randburg.

So I hear you.. hence me posting about the funding as I know it ruffles people’s feathers. Many forget about the revenue protection the venture has aside from gov funding spent on project. Ironically this is why they were slow to increase capacity during peak.. ie they make the same money regardless.

Now it’s interesting that people say “user pay” because eTolls has this exact issue.. from Guateng highway project to Western Cape Winelands highway.. national coffers needed to improve a regional transit asset.. combo that with report that SA needs about R400Bn investment in its road network alone you can see where I’m going.. ie can SA afford to always take it out of the National fiscus? Who should pay for these things?

One of the major factors in a successful democracy is the maintenance and expansion of a country wide road & rail network as it affords service delivery to all people.. yet can you expect eg Northern Cape with its few people to pay for its own infrastructure in isolation? Relooking at the eTolls the decision by motorists now seem very selfish doesn’t it? Don’t get me wrong I agree with some issues of the implementation and contracting.. but post fact, it becoming law and losing legal opposition to system is it fair to through country under the fiscal bus?

A similar story exists with the SOEs.. why don’t we all protest, pull the plug on funding Eskom and live in the dark? Oh we need electricity.. right. I sometimes think the reason eTolls protest been “successful” is because they continued services despite not being paid for it.. I’d love to see the chaos that happens when Sanral stays off servicing the highway.

Errr... the Western Cape collectively pays more tax than it gets back from the national budget - by a margin somewhere north of R100bn. The question should actually be whether the rest of the country could survive without the W. Cape.

So I was reading another article about them wanting to use country tax funds & municipal taxes (vehicle, road etc) to fund it.

Watch this space as I reckon if the current revenue protection/guarantee is extended some big managers there are gonna be upgrading their cars and houses on the coast. (It was a dumb deal signed by Gauteng Province).

Lastly I think a major reorganization of carriage seating and standing needs to be done along with a massive price reduction as a result of it not being premium for this to be sustainable without gov backing/funding but I don’t see them doing it.. it’s nice having income guarantees.

Realty is that Uber is more affordable for airport leg and everyone I know that use to take it now orders an Uber..
Well it depends on where you live for me Gautrain is cheaper to the airport than Uber.

My gripe was that Gautrain does not serve the South of JHB - Stops at Park Station.
I'm aware of the Gautrain Bus to Randburg, and the new plans show a station in Randburg.
The expansion is east-west-north with no plans for due-south.

People live in the south as well.

You are probably going to have to switch trains at the new Samrand station from South to North line to go to Centurion.

The two/three biggest stations would probably Samrand and Marlboro/Sandton where all the switching is going to happen so hopefully they plan that properly.

meh, I thought that might be the case. Bit silly, but I guess that makes sense for the route.

And Gauteng tax payers pay even more and get back even less - what’s your point?

You said:
Would love to use Gautrain - the closest station is Park - 9.5km away and does not go to Randburg.

9.5km is not such a big deal. And then your problem was that is does not go to Randburg. If your main gripe was the lack of service in the south, it didn't come across that way, or I misinterpreted.

Either way, my bad. Carry on, as you were.

Gauteng's contribution dwarfs the Western Cape by quite a bit:

Three of the provinces of South Africa contributed 77.9% of the total tax revenue: Gauteng 49.8%, Western Cape 15.0%, and KwaZulu-Natal 13.1%

You can't make this comparison about taxes, because large companies that employ the most people are only headquartered and pay tax in the capital cities, whist they opperate in the other provinces. And you get your food for the other provinces.

There's some teamwork required if you want to be one country.

Its debatable, Uber is more expensive for me 1 - person to the airport. I also use it for Sandton-Pretoria and Sandton-Johannesburg and then Uber the last leg of my trip.

I'm also tired of the Uber app telling me a driver is coming and 30mins later his car is just moving around in circles (and if i cancel it I get billed).

Keep thinking that provincial revenue is the only thing to take into consideration.
