What will also be interesting to see is how many subscribers these ISPs still have that use dial-up. And there must be some, because we still sell quite a few 56k modems every month!!

I dont really trust these numbers... it would be better to look at actual throughput, and maybe do a comparison to these numbers and see who is actually using the internet in south africa compared to where people have accounts... might make for interesting reading...

Telkom probably has so many subscribers because of marketing hype.. pity most people have no clue ...
I wonder how many of those subscribers are ACTIVE users. I still have an Axxess pre-paid account for "emergency" but I haven't used it in many months now. I moved over from Axxess to Mweb coz Axxess is an epic fail when it comes to uncapped adsl. Read my blog from my signature...the "before"/"after" is astounding.
for the average home user that uses 1 gig a month, telkom is all they need. they offer decent (if slow) support line and it works most of the time. Im not surprised that they are number one, as they are quite happy to sell a bundle to people with everything included. Most people dont understand the difference between telephone line, adsl line and adsl usage, and as such they just get a do1 package from telkom for R199. This satisfies most people, and if people are looking for more, and get involved in myBB... They might look outside there comfort zone, and try someone like Web Africa or Mweb. But honestly I think most people couldn't really care, and they just want internet, and they probably heard about this "adsl" and they just ask telkom to get adsl... telkom are quite happy to sell them a 24 month contract with a router and internet...

Thats why i said they should compare internet usare at JINX and CINX etc to see who is using the most, and who has the most accounts... etc...
Im pretty sure MOST of those telkom accounts are 1gig accounts.. where most of those other ISP's are selling higher amounts...

Other than to be able to offer bundled services, does Telkom really want to be in the ISP business?
I subscribed to telkom ages ago, in about 2004, when their capping policy was very lenient and one could get around 50GB a month. They steadily dropped their cap to 5GB but for a while they were the cheapest even at 5GB. Then, let's not forget they also offer 30GB local. Unless you're prepared to pay an extra R300 for uncapped R7 per GB is still one of the best offerings available in SA today for someone who uses usenet.

Not surprised Nashua never got back to them.Most useless company on the planet in terms of customer support. There helpline has probably 2 people serving it at al times and 1000 people calling it because their service is so ****e.
Telkoms number is expected but in terms of through-put I'm sure MWEB with their uncapped or IS with all their business customers ( their uncapped is throttled to do 3 gigs max anyway) do the most. Openweb has 5000 customers, explains the brilliant customer service

Besides that... there is probably also a lot of subscribers that have one or more accounts with multiple ISPs. I have one with OpenWeb, one with Afrihost and one with WebAfrica. So the actual number of individual subscribers could be far lower.

This is the ISP side, so those are active customers...
Telkom have so many subscribers because they have the BEST capped products by far (in terms of speed, reliability and ping). They are fast, and unlike every other ISP, they are always working. They also have the lowest pings, which is why any one who takes their online gaming seriously, has a telkom account.

Remember, the vast majority of internet users out there are not techno geeks, or bother to keep up to date with has per GB. They just want an all in one install, setup and deliver ISP and as a result the masses go for Telkom.
Local gaming aside, Telkom accounts get terrible pings to the EU and America (350ms+). You'll do much better with an IS account for EU gaming (220ms+).
Unless you game in SEA (where you'll get 240ms+) Telkom shaped is not the way to go. Pinoy gaming is worse than ZA gaming though.
