Hi hope you guy's can help me....

We bought our router cash at a telkom store, it was a Mega 105WR back in 2008 and use openweb as an ISP.

So the lightning struck out our Mega 105WR so I took it back to the telkom shop and they said they can give me this crap Billion 800VGT but I have to pay in R500 cause they dont stock the 105WR anymore.

Went home pluged the 800VGT in but the ADSL/PPP connection keeps on shining green. So I phoned telkom, a technician came out and he tested the line with his 105WR and it works like a dream, so we figured it was a faulty modem. Went back to the telkom shop and got a brand new 800VGT but im still getting the same problem where it syncs but it doesnt give me a PPP connection.

Sometimes if i do get a PPP conection it doesnt last for long, and my packet loss is about 40% with a ping of over 300ms.

On the line itself the technician also changed the port at the exchange, reset the port, took down my 4meg to a 3meg and tried bridge mode, but to no avail.

So in my mind im thinking why does the 105WR work fine but the 800VGT refuses to work. I paid for this stupid router and they dont stock anything else.....

Any help would be appreciated, as telkom's grade 7 opperators dont know much.

If you paid a technician to come out, then he should have left you with a working router.

Are they not selling the 105WR now? I saw it in a Telkom shop window.

I did ask if they have any other routers but he said they only stock those 800VGT's at Westgate, he phoned a few other branches but nobody had it.....

I don't know the Billion, but I'm sure many would say it's better (when working).

Your best bet: Buy a "router". Not a piece of plastic that Telkom claims works :)
Usually if the "router" has Netgear or Linksys written on it, then it is doomed to work forever :D

I suppose i could buy another one.... but then i basically wasted cash:(.
If i do buy a new router/modem what should i get?

When your router loses a PPP connection it is most likely due to the bad line. Ask Telkom to specifically test your line attenuation and signal attenuation ratio.

I have sent you a PM requesting the required info that we would need to further investigate you’re PPP/Sync issue. There’s a number of line factors that could contribute to the problem described above but I am sure that we can find the root cause as soon as we receive the requested information.

Why is it that Telkom supply these Billion models we can't see on the Billion site. Are they special in some way (cheap & nasty) or are they re-badged? We'd like to be able to read international opinion and reviews about hardware.

Agreed, only one I can find is that Billion Bipak that seem 10/10.
One of the guys I know had a similar issue with the 800VGT, he then bought one of the bipak modems for R500.00 and worked like a dream. That R500.00
was what i paid in extra to get the 800VGT.....

Problamatic connection since November 2008. :(

Also got this problem but as extreme as yours, my dsl will drop randomly and then connect again. Sometimes after like 5hours then sometimes like 1hour later, very random. logged fault with telkom so ill see. thinking of getting friends old Planet router and trying it out.

But did you know that Netgear is just a rebranded version of Billion
Sorry to say this to you Hxx but you still have a Billion
