BitCo Consumer Review

How long does it take for the FUP to be lifted, I did a big steam download during the night, let it run until about 1pm, then switched my pc off, no one was at home as well, so nothing was utilizing the internet, fast forward about 5 hours later and a speed test shows that my 5mb connection is still being FUP'd http://netgauge.ookla.com/share/193828378.png , isn't it supposed to be lifted like after an hour if you stop heavy downloading?

"Customer behavior which may cause an Internet service to be throttled includes using bandwidth intensive protocols such as peer-to-peer or performing unattended downloads of large files. Throttling may also occur when a customer downloads at near 100% of the line capacity for approximately 1 hour. The throttling is then automatically removed after the excessive usage has stopped for a similar period of time:- equal to how long the download was active.

Hope this helps

Hi All,

A quick update on the two points above in the thread:

1: Hulu Streaming, We have done an investigation into this and confirm Hulu forms part of online media streaming and is in the highest priority on the network, what we suspect here is that Hulu has a limited amount of international bandwidth coming from their core in Colorado, this would be based on the fact this service is only designed to be utilized in the USA

2: BF4, We have been testing this service with various residential customers and would like to thank everyone for the support so far. it seems this specific game is using unique and random ports each and every time a new session is started so it has been very difficult for us to prioritise these ports as they continuously change. We have made changes to our core network routing last night and will monitor the usage and feedback over the weekend.

We are confident we will resolve this issue and welcome the continued feedback and support from all our residential customers.

Mike

Tried Bf4 and Hardline last night with no luck again...

Its seems that the FUP policy has gone rogue, PC started downloading an update for GPU. It started at 8:27am and completed at 9:25am, which first of all is just shy of 1 hour, fast forward 1 hour later, I'm still being throttled..... it is now 10:51am and the throttling FUP is still active.

That's happened to me too,but with torrents at 40% of line speed for 6 hours (0-6am) then FUP'd for the rest of the day or so. This weekend I decided screw FUP, removed all limiters etc and it only kicked in after 4 hours or so.

This has not been my experience. FAP active after any p2p that exceeds 51% of line speed, regardless of time. Then not lifted at all unless I close/stop for about 60min. Today is prime example. Started on 50% of line speed and only thanks to 2 hrs of load shedding was I back at full speed.

Then 20 min later (as in power restored at 8 and throttled at 8:20) back to 50%. I was a huge fan, not so much now.

"BitCo makes use of bandwidth throttling to slow down Internet speeds where a
customer’s behaviour is determined to be affecting the user experience of other customers on
BitCo's network. "

It is my opinion that Bitco's AFUP is not customer friendly nor specific enough to inspire any confidence. In my eyes that makes it neither fair nor acceptable. BUT
How about some transparency Bitco, never knowing when, how long, and why is my issue. With clear and reliable FUP this would be very different.

@OCD,hey buddy, word to the wise don't do P2P torrent downloads during the day you are wasting time and resources, set a schedule between 11pm to 4 am for P2P downloads and any other large file downloads that you need to do. From 6am to 6pm you are farting against thunder. P2P's are completely throttled during the day by Bitco.

With regards to the FUP, I completely agree with you, something is not right!
It is clearly defined in the policy posted on the site however the implementation and application is quite different!

Use it ....don't use it

So I'd like to put this here if it's okay with the mods cross linking :

http://carbonite.co.za/f3/bitco-worth-fair-usage-violation-100610/

Seems to be just another person who figured if he limits his speed to 90% of the line speed he won't get throttled. He seems to have missed the part about the leaky bucket system. why don't people just use it the way it's intended when they signed up... I know if I download something big the speed will throttle and at some time return to normal. It's pretty naive to think you can bullshyte a limitation on the network by sneaky work a rounds.

This should be made very clear by Bitco in my personal opinion. If you download heavy you will get throttled. Simple as that. You'll have 1/2 line speed which is still pretty damn good. I would love to see how he whines once another ISP kills his speed completely. At least here it's temporary and the reason I signed up with them. I know I can't download 40GB in one night. I just plan accordingly. So should he.

Let me just add this:
This works for me and the reason I signed up with them knowing exactly what my needs are and how I will be impacted by their FUP (before I signed up). If you can't handle their FUP better to go somewhere else. But understand it and don't try beat the system. If you can do that you'll be happy I'm sure.

You will more than likely find that the individuals bitching and moaning are the individuals abusing the link....well put!

There is a problem with BF4 as per Bitco's own admission. They are working on a resolution. Or so I gathered from the thread about it.

Got a mail from them today That they made some changes and we need to test. I tested but still the same problem. I am sure they will resolve it eventual.

Dice/EA have started using randomized ports and ips on the servers which in turn Bitcos network is reading the connection as a P2P torrent, hence the failure in connection they have made adjustments and there is an improvement but it's still work in progress

I get moments where I can play 2 -3 maps and then dc and then 2 -3 min. But I'm confident they will solve it.
