BitCo Consumer Review

But if you have access to other more cheaper options why Bitco then if money is the issue?

It's about providing a service people are prepared to pay for. If you have a choice between Bitco, ADSL and FTTH yet you complain about Bitco's pricing/FUP I don't think Bitco is the issue then do you?

@Pitbull, yes paying for a premium service thats one of the reason why I chose Bitco however in today's day and age you will look everywhere to get more bang for your buck, don't you agree!

Still never get throttled on 10 MB/s with Netflix/gaming/YouTube. Only with torrents/large downloads.

Value for money, no. But it's the best service for money I can get seeing as I can't get ADSL or FTTH.

Best service for money granted, however how about a little bit of value added performance, you are paying R1499 bucks for a "10mb/s service" which potentially only runs at 40 % of that speed, the other 60% of the time it runs at 5mb/s so what are you paying for a 10mb/s service or a 5mb/s service. The R1499 in the fibre world runs full tilt no leaky bucket at 40 mb/s unshaped uncapped. Now that is value. The point im trying to get across is the performance of the service in comparison with the fee charged. SPEED

You can't compare wireless to fiber. Apart from raw network bandwidth there is also the wireless equipment bandwidth because of multiple users.

Am I happy what I am paying currently, no. It's reasonable considering I can't get 10mbps ADSL but at least I get a solid 5ms ping to google

The comparison is not against fibre to wireless it is a comparison of speed to rand value and please don't tell me wireless is more expensive than fibre to distribute.Let me put it this way

40mb/s Fibre = R 1499.00

10mb/s Wireless = R 1499.00

What would you choose, if you had the choice?....................exactly ,that is why im calling for Bitco to show a little bit more value for money!

HINT HINT......: 1. 10mb/s down - 2mb/s up push it up to 20mb/s down - 4 mb/s up R 1499.00

Well firstly their home equipment only does 15/3(sucks), the business wireless equipment is more expensive and on their own licensed spectrum(ICASA fees).

No question to which package would be better, doesn't mean it's financially viable for Bitco. They are looking at a 15mbps package but looks like it may only be available September-December.

I'm keen to pay for 20mbps but they/no one seems willing to take my money :P

And I ask again do you HAVE TO HAVE a 10Meg line to actually enjoy Bitco internet? Why paralyze the 5Meg product?? It doesn't even throttle to 2.5megs it goes to 2Megs and that 0.5 counts at such low speeds

I imagine the 5mbps package is just enough to piss of heavy users to force upgrade(which I did) which is their intention.

Before they removed the 2mbps option the throttling was

2mbps - 1mbps
5mbps - 2mbps
10mbps - 5mbps

You can see which package got stuffed..

BITCO vs Fair

Quick note to those that missed it, and are interested in the FUP issues:

Bitco again changed the FUP this week. They have given themselves the ability to entirely block certain traffic. The details (as is the norm for Bitco) are missing, just that if they want to - then they can - and actually already do.

I noticed however that on the new sales portion FAQ of bitco.co.za they say that p2p is allowed. Yet FUP no lie.

OOOCd

Well, knowledge is power. Being a current customer I have a few things to consider before recommending to others

Are songs from Simfy Africa blocked during office hours? It's the first time I try using it during the week in what would be normally office hours and songs just aren't loading. It may be Simfy that's having problems though. I've contacted them to hear if they've got problems.

Does anyone else here make use of Simfy?

I'm on simfy right now and it's working like a boss.

Just moved into my new house without Telkom infrastructure and the Estate is still early days reviewing fibre infrastructure. I must say coming from Mweb premium uncapped 10meg to Bitco 10meg uncapped, the experience has been great. Torrents are shaped on both packages during peak hours, but with Bitco, I seem to get better average speeds during off peak. Video streaming is great and now I got the added bonus that Twitch.tv streams flawlessly on "source" quality which Mweb ADSL I could hardly stream on medium quality. Line is very stable and low latencies.

I can honestly say the experience has been a lot better compared to ADSL - granted I have only been using it for 3 weeks.

Wait what? You are very concerned about a trusted, reputable ISP using DPI on their network for traffic control, but you are completely happy with sending personal information over a wireless link?

I think you may need to re-think your security priorities.

Murmaider - your observation is accurate which is why ALL my info is over a VPN. Even so a case in the UK recently highlighted how an ISP (with a DPI tool) was ordered by a court order to disclose certain details on one of their subscribers. The two individuals arrested and charged with child related sex crimes eventually had all charges dropped when it was discovered that the Police (not ISP) had somehow in error given first the court and then the ISP an incorrect email account. The email addr was short a hyphen.

Extreme case I know but tell that to the two who are 100% innocent, but still have pedo remarks shouted at them.

Also
My concern and frustration has to do with Bitco implementing systems that should translate into happier customers. Where is the upside to this DPI?

Now that the DPI is implemented and torrents are completely blocked during office hours and only protocols Bitco wants are allowed shouldnt there be less throttling? So we should be able to stream for longer without being shaped because as far as we know the leaky bucket system was in place for abusers(torrents) so should be not get more time at full line capacity before being throttled to half the speed seeing that there shouldnt be any abuse now after the new DPI you guys implemented. If not then how is the DPI of any benefit?

...so should be not get more time at full line capacity before being throttled to half the speed seeing that there shouldnt be any abuse now...

We should not be throttled at all for streaming or downloading windows updates. That is not abuse of the service it is all normal internet usage nowadays. We do not pay them half of the monthly fees

True all of that is considered normal use and if they are inspecting each packet then Bitco knows that we just using the internet fairly and should not be throttled so heavily

What is the status of Bitco and BF4. I see this thread littered with posts about it not working, and essentially Bitco saying they wont reply here anymore but have made a blog page. http://bitco.co.za/bf4/ - last updated 9th July. No news for over a month. As a new bitco user I am unable to play BF4 on PC as I am always receive packet loss and am disconnected. There is clearly something broken and needs to be fixed. Can we get an update pls.

Battlefield works fine for now on servers with pings higher than 30 i think. Anything lower than that basically seems to disconnect and loses connection to the server. I play with no packet loss so maybe could be your tower. Maybe log a support ticket and see if they can get you sorted.
