Black names

Nobody can spell my name and I've never complained. My surname is really easy to spell though, but do you think anyone can get it right? Why should I "learn" black names? Why should I learn any names for that matter if they're not the names of people I know? Mr. Zukeka Jacob is full of it.

9 out of 10 times my surname is spelt wrong by people or pronounced so incorrectly it fathoms belief, but i dont throw a wobbly about it.

I just correct the person and carry on as normal. There is no need to go on like this chick does...

Maybe its "that" time of the month...:D

I have an Afrikaans name and when I give my name to a person for official use I still spell it, it is only good manners.

I have found only English woman spell it correctly anyway, which is the strangest of all. Still, when the state department officials spell it incorrectly even after I spell it for them, I don't feel the burning need to write a letter to a news agency.
What on earth is "Black names"??

It works in reverse too buddy, My girlfiends name is Siobhan (pronounced Shi-vaughn), I think it is shocking that the "new" South Africa has not progressed enough to spell it correctly :D

I dealt with a Siobhan once. Confused the hell out of me when she spelt her name after having said it. I've got to hand it to her. She took my Er What moment in her stride.

What does irritate the hell out of me is the - I can never pronounce your names line

There really is no shame in not being able to pronounce someones name, nor should the owner of that name feel shame either. It is not a slap in the face, nor is it intended to cause grief. Any claims to the contrary are stupid.

What does get me is the inability of someone to write down my name when I spell it out. They just make up the letters. That shows a rudeness of monumental proportions - you ask me to spell my name and then completely ignore me for the next 5 letters. And that goes for everyone, of all languages and all races. If you are going to ask a question, listen to the answer.

Bah.

Mary, Rose, Stella, Wellington, Keneth, Reuben, Gwen, Patricia, Aubery, Johannes, and even Gert were some of the names of my black co-workers (and those were young people).
Arriving from KZN, my first reaction was like "WTF, these names are way colonial"????

Johannes is indeed a good "English" name.

Well .. now I know how to spell Zukeka. Awesome.
Only 60 000 or so names left to learn, YEA!
Luckuily I have all the free time in the world to learn all these names that I am NEVER exposed to because I just won the non existant lotto and have dedicated the rest of the next 4 years to meeting as many people as possible and asking them their names and the spelling of their names.

Pffffffffffft. Ludicrous!

P.S. Zukeka, I do not appreciate the demeaning tone in your letter. If I ever do business with a Zukeka, I will immediately be defensive and untrusting.

Well, Zukeka old boy ( or girl, or whatever ), your Xhosa/Nguni speaking brothers and sisters consistently mispronounce my names. I don't object to spelling them out. I don't whine about their unwillingness to learn my names. So why don't you just STFU!

LOL! One organization I knew had TWO people name "Grecious", incorrect spelling and all! Goodness grecious me!!!

We could never resist a chuckle whenever the teacher called out the class register. We had names like 'Faka Phakathi' in our class, which translates to 'put it in'. and then 'Khipa Futhi' literally meaning 'take it out again'

I've been called anything from Cyril to Zorro to Sirro...

Zuma has a funny shaped head...
his real name is actually 'Gedleyihlekisa'. Don't ask me what it means. I know but it's just so damn hard to translate that whole story in Englsih.
