BlackBerry 10: SA operators respond

Why is there a 12 year old working at 8ta? A family friend of the Guptas?

The new BB phone's hardware specs are quite impressive.
BB10 uses QNX as its operating system. QNX has been around for decades (it was considered a real-time critical operating system back in the day).

So some thoughts form my side (Im not a BB user or fan):
- Using QNX is a smart move, the OS has a long history. Last when i worked on it, it was rock-damn-solid on x86 platforms, not to mention super fast.
- BB now have competitive hardware.
- All the networks know that the success of BB in SA is dependent on BIS. Before making judgement, wait for MTN/VODA/CELLC/8.ta to respond with their offerings. It might not be as cheap as BIS, but it might still be affordable.

Patience, as they say, is a virtue.

My 2 bits. :D

EDIT: (QNX wiki) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QNX

This is basically the same 8ta article from earlier this week since the other operators didn't really respond :wtf:

MTN will range the Blackberry 10 device and “is excited at the possibilities that the new operating system brings for its customers”.

I'm sure you are excited at the possibilities of how much extra you can now ring out of your customers.
Bloody thugs.

So what's going to happen if I stick the BB 7 sim in a BB 10? I can already see someone try to jippo this.

The way the phone routes your traffic via a certain APN is handled by the software...not the sim. So if the OS or a app dictates that your traffic must go via the carriers apn and not the BIS one...then that is where it will go.

RIP BB
No BIS. going to be a hard sell

This doesn't mean that BIS will be stopped for the OS7 and older devices does it? BIS is fine on that lowered spec phones. I think its a bloody good thing that there will be no BIS on the new phones, BIS is just bloody crap (and overpriced). The new phones stand a much better chance without BS... i mean BIS. The lack of BIS will probably mostly affect the low income segment of the market, but that is not really where the money is.

my guess is APN settings is phone specific - they will pick up if you use a new sim...

but other side of the coin. no BIS - means normal APN, and thus the same speed as other smart phones :D

BBM and other chat apps really doesnt use R50 of data a month - so it is still possible to have a BB10 with R50 of data and do only BBM on it...
data packages dropped alot the past year or two :)
think 8ta / cell-c will win the pricing race

The only reason ppl in SA buy BB is because of the "uncapped" BIS. The average dodo doesn't know that they only use about 50mb per month so they will be scared to take out a BB with a cap as we will probably see. As a result people will stick with their old phones while others are 'indifferent' between Apple, Android and BB.

No, the OS 4 and 5 and 6 and 7 phones out there will continue on their plans.

Are you counting in e-mail too? I use a lot more than 50mb per month

Maybe 100Mb, 200Mb, who cares? 100Mb is like R15 so for the R60 which BIS costs you can get 400MB. Doubt you use that much on a BB, even with email and especially not considering everything is compressed

You will be very surprised about the data usage on BIS. It is progressively worse on BB10 - just looking at yesterdays unlock of Hub on the alpha kit, the OS and it's applications are very chatty. Have not really played around much with it, but it looks like mail client polls and does not support push (i.e. my icloud/me.com accounts are not pushing through as fast as they do on iOS or iMail).
