BlackBerry speed tests

What I just did was to disable my GSM network and only have my WIFI enabled and got the following speed result:

Oct 27 16:28:50

Here are the Speedtest results for my Blackberry:

Connection Type: Wifi on my 8520
Avg. Download Speed: 491.36Kbits/s
Max. Download Speed: 518.46Kbits/s

Avg. Upload Speed: 231.43Kbits/s
Max. Upload Speed: 233.53Kbits/s

Sent via my BlackBerry

Which is consistent with my 4MB ADSL connection so it cannot be inaccurate.

This morning I had excellent throughput though.

well, my experience of the app is almost as inconsistant as the vodacom service. Test Time outs when the browsing works etc. I'm not disputing the fact that the network is slow, i just find the speedtest app to be very unreliable.

Any alternative tools out there?

Surely these speeds are in excess of what EDGE technology can deliver?

It seems some of the Tests are bordering on the edge of hysteria.

Lets keep it real, else this thread will lose all credibility and end up wasting contributors time and we dont want that.

While some people have been questioning the speed test and what it actually tests for, VCD and fismail comes to mind, it is very simple to check whether the test is consistant with your browsing experience.

Earlier I disabled the GSM and only enabled WIFI and did a WIFI based test and it reflected the fact that it was WIFI.

I believe most people will not really run a test if their browsing/download experience is fine, only when they are finding poor performance.

Point to take home here is that the Vodacom Blackberry Internet Service is inconsistant which this thread has established.

Going back 24 hours, I was posting great speeds and fismail had poor performance.

I would venture a guess, it seems the load is being spread as there is not enough for all, just how it looks to me.

Prove me wrong please and let all subscribers get a great BIS experience, not borrow from Peter to pay Paul.

Still no response from VodacomData

We waited for the 24 October and now what?

Some of the posts above look _real_ so does that indicate an _upgrade_ that was successful :erm:

is it possible to tether the blackberry 8520?

Yes it is, simply install the BDM software and plug your 8520 into your PC/Notebook USB port.

You _will_ be charged out of bundle rates of R2.00 per MB though.

Tetherberry will also cost the same.

Only on-device Internet usage goes via BIS.

This is really getting better by the day, Vodacom seem to be on the ball! Got to love it. BB 8520

As far as I can establish, the Curve 8900 does not have 3G capacity, how on earth are the following speeds as reported by Fismail even possible?

Connection Type: Vodacom - Curve 8900 - EDGE/GPRS - 4.6.1.298 (Platform 4.2.0.127)
Avg. Download Speed: 765.48Kbits/s
Max. Download Speed: 765.48Kbits/s

Maybe someone can enlighten us as to what the device is capable of, then we'll know whether the speedtest app. is to be trusted or not.......
