Bloemfontein FTTH Thread

Frogfoot has been installing in our complex this week, over by Henriette Grove str. They were in my flat today installing the final link.

I forgot to ask the guys while they were here, but is there any indication about when all this should go live?

I've also been out of the internet-shopping game for a while, happily been on VOX fat-pipe ADSL for the past 5 years. I had a look around on the forum, and it looks like Cool Ideas (CISP) is the popular way to go?

I don't know about the complexes themselves, but that area is set to go live on 30 Nov.
I've also been eyeing CISP as my fibre ISP of choice - my brother uses them and he's quite happy. Best ISP for Netflix too :)

@wir & @Praeses

Since I moved to Universitas-Ridge, I've been with CISP via Openserve fibre and couldn't be happier. Sure, a little bit more pricey than most other ISPs, but the service and performance that you get more than makes up for it. You guys wouldn't make a mistake, trust me ;)

Frogfoot finally started trenching in front of my house yesterday. My kerb is getting crowded now with Vodacom, SADV and Frogfoot pipes. With VC and SADVs inability to connect me, maybe it'll be third time lucky with Frogfoot.
@wir: Zone 3 "go live" is 30 November, but at the rate they're trenching now I wouldn't be surprised (or mind) if they go live earlier.

Cool, good to know :)

So the process of getting online with CISP, that'll entail making an account and I'm assuming they include a router that gets shipped over to me, at which point I should be able to connect relatively quickly?

Yeah, just head on over to their site and do the signup there. No need to create an account prior to that, as they'll email you the details. During the signup process you can then specify if you want to use your own router, or if you want a new one :)

Does anybody know if it's possible to have two fibre providers serve one townhouse complex?

I'm still waiting for SADV to do a site inspection - and SADV themselves have no f-ing schedule for when it'll happen. I don't know how businesses can operate this way!
Luckily Frogfoot is busy with their fibre in my street - so was wondering if I should push our HOA to get Frogfoot installed? Will they have to dig up the complex in different places and install another fibre box in each unit?

Hi Praeses,

There should be no issues for you to have two fibre providers to serve one complex, unless one provider has an exclusivity clause in their contract that forces the complex only to make use of them. My suggestion, check Frogfoot's coverage map for LHP and see if your complex is also listed by them for a future installation. I know for a fact that there are definitely complexes on their coverage map that has access to DFA / SADV fibre as well.

Hi Everyone

Does anyone know who is doing Pellissier? I saw a bakkie the other day with the name "Commutergroup" on it, the website: commutergroup.co.za isn't very helpful and I tried contacting them.
If anyone can provide me with details on who to contact with regards to when this will be active, please let me know. Thanks.

Hi ScraT86,

It's ten to one Frogfoot. Check their coverage map (use the LHP) option as the Bloemfontein one doesn't work correctly (at the time of replying to your message). On the LHP coverage map you'll see they've earmarked Pellissier for rollout, so it *could* be them. SADV's coverage map doesn't show anything for Pellissier. Odd chance that it could also be Vodacom/Telkom/MTN/Cell-C also doing upgrades to their equipment in the area.

Hope it helps :)

Hey guys,

I'm in the Fichardtpark area, does anyone know when ftth will be live in this area? If so, can you provide a link to where it shows the status so I can check the progress?

Thanx.

Hey IcePickTommy,

Visit the following link:

https://www.frogfootfibre.com/frogfoot/myaccount/home//frogfoot/coverage.jsp

and select Bloemfontein in the dropdown box. You'll see that Fichartpark is subdivided into 4 different zones. You'll need to check from time to time each zone via the site as they only update the "live" date for each zone once it's marked as "WIP". I'd say a rough estimate would be at least by end of October next year. They're still finishing up in LHP and then I think Universitas (incl. the Ridge) will be next and only after that they'll move southbound.

:)

Damn, another year thought it would be sooner! Gonna have to get lte in the meantime, coz this 4mb line is just not working for me!

Thanx for the info!

No problem!

Keep in mind, that I'm just speculating and it *could* be sooner. But at least you can be rest assured that it's going to happen eventually

That's a bummer, what about Frogfoot? Does their coverage map show that they'll do your complex?
So I've been speaking with SADV - apparently the reason for DFA's refusal is as follows:
" No pipelines identifiable in the area other than residential houses. Spur is 300m with road crossing required "

Yet the complex a stone's throw away is going live next week. So SADV will follow up - I've attached a screenshot of their own coverage of my area for reference, so that they can see that they already have fibre laid here.

Do you maybe have contact details for a BFN rep for Frogfoot? They laid fibre in front of the complex yesterday - their coverage map only indicates "planned" fibre for the complex, so I would like to see if I can help them out to get our complex covered soon.

I'm very disappointed in SADV. I don't understand the business model where they trench along hundreds of houses to get to a townhouse/complex, but never give the home owners an option to connect to their network. It is exclusive to townhouses even though I've got their cable in my yard. Then in the neighbourhood next door (Universitas) they go out of their way to give home owners access to fibre.
I also struggled for about two months to get a sprinkler pipe fixed they broke when they trenched in front of my house. Stephan also does not reply to all emails / messages and is overall not very helpful.
I mean, I want to give them money, but they are obviously not interested.

I get the feeling that SADV is either really swamped with work (short staffed), or they don't really care, except when they want you to sign up with them. After that, you better just hold thumbs that something will actually happen.

You can try contacting / messaging a guy named Peet Venter via Facebook. He is the admin of the Bloem Fibre FB Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/164159220929393/). He works for Vox, but remember that Frogfoot is subsidiary of Vox so he'll be able to give you an indication.

@IAMUSER, SADV has two departments, namely SADV Complexes and SADV Suburbia (which only covers houses like in Universitas etc). I believe that only the "Complexes" section is active in LHP, so as a home owner, you'd rather have better luck with Frogfoot for fibre to your home (if you live in LHP). Check their coverage map on their website, chances are good you'll get sorted with them.
