Bloemfontein FTTH Thread

Okay, so I have no idea who the fibre provider is, but Vox did give me a call yesterday saying that they expect the work to be completed in around 2 weeks and that they expect Bayswater to go live about a week after that too. Since all the coverage maps seem heavily outdated and what Vox offered over the phone - free installation for the first 30m of trenching, I'm in a panhandle so my driveway is loooong - plus I'm already with them for ADSL is making me seriously consider taking up a preorder with them. Any compelling reason to consider other ISP's?

The 30m is normally covered by the fibre provider, not the ISP. 30m is what Frogfoot offers (don't know if other providers offer different deals) so it could be them?
I'm with Coolideas - getting great speeds. I have friends living in the same suburb than me with bad Vox speeds - don't know for sure though as I haven't run tests on their line yet. Same fibre provider and probably connected to the same hub for the suburb though.

I've done some more digging and it seems it does vary from provider to provider. So far Frogtfoot is the only one I've come across that offers 30m, the others all seem to be in the 5m-10m range in which case I will be footing a pretty hefty bill.

With Cool Ideas are they subject to an annual price escalation? I know Vox does an increase every year so I want to factor that into my decision too. It doesn't help - performance aside - a cheaper option this year but two years later I'm paying more.

Afaik, CISP doesn't escalate their prices annually from what I've seen. I'm with them as well on Openserve fibre and getting great speeds as well like Praeses.

The escalation definitely makes a difference over time. Before I moved I was with Iclix and their uncapped wirelesss and the price remained the same over a period of 5 years. I think you posted previously you're on the 100meg package? What sort of speeds do you get?

I'm on 100mb package, yes and get full speeds 24/7 basically on everything I do. I'll post some speed tests for you later if you want.

I'd appreciate it if you could

Got 3 friends who have gone Fixed LTE, as the wait for fiber is just taking too long.
Fixed LTE won't work for my usage patterns, besides that it's also not great value for money

In Navalview and Fiber seems to be creeping nearer at a snail's pace. SA Digital Villages has asked who wants fiber in the area, so hopefully that is meaning full in some manner or other.

Our complex in Andries Pretoriusstreet were made fibre ready in November 2017. Still no fibre in the street. So no fibre in the complex. I think its slower moving than a snail's pace. I guess there is no demand in the area and in this economic times it will take even longer.

It is miracle! There is some movement this week and I can get fibre now.

Our complex have been done by SA Digital Villages. Which ISP do you guys recommend?

Yes I know there are many recommendations here on MyBB. But I want specifically the good people of Bloem
to recommend an ISP.

Good service all around is very big requirement from my side. Free routers, free installation fees not so much.
I just want an ISP to dependable & very helpful.

Hi, where in Bloem do you live?
Cool Ideas is the better option in my opinion, but not the cheapest...depends on what speed you are going with as well.
According to SADV's site our complex is live in LHP...I placed an order with Cool Ideas to get the ONT installed, but not sure how long that will take and even if our complex is really live...

Hey, our complex is in Andries Pretoriusstreet (now Raymond Mhlaba). Strangely enough, according to Cool Ideas fibre is not availible in my area. But on websites like Axxess and Home-Connect fibre is availible and I can order from them.

That's really odd.

I suggest you send either @CoolChick or @TheRoDent a PM and ask them to investigate. I'm also with Cool Ideas in Bloem on Openserve's network and no complaints whatsoever. I will recommend them too from my side :)

I'm on Frogfoot with Cool Ideas in LHP - very happy customer :)

Quick update from my end, our complex in LHP is finally LIVE (SADV).
Installation of ONT will take place at 11am tomorrow morning! Very excited!

How long did it take SADV from start to finish?
I think all-in-all it was about 3-4 weeks worth of work (complex has 12 units), but waited about 8-9 months before our complex was live...
But with that said, most of those issues that caused the long delays have been fixes so new complexes or houses shouldn't take that long...

Congrats dude, good grief it took long!

Post some speed tests once your connection is live, always nice to see how the different providers stack up against each other :)

Very happy to be part of the fiber hype, at last!!
One thing, they did not have stock in the Calix 801 ONT so they gave me a huge Calix 814G-1 ONT...
Also they guy told me that the yellow Fiber cable costs R2500 to replace if it breaks...I checked on Scoop Distributions a Ubiquiti 90M 6 core Armoured fiber cable costs R2500...Screenshot_20190418-121924.jpg20190418_103739.jpg
